After speaking with Nigerians in Cape Town yesterday, I was able to have meaningful discussions this morning with three South African ministers and political party leaders regarding the ongoing challenges related to immigration, regional collaboration, and fostering peaceful coexistence between our nations. I had the pleasure of meeting with Mr Leon Schreiber, the South African Minister of Home Affairs and a prominent figure in the Democratic Alliance; Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and Mr Gayton McKenzie, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture and leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA). Our conversations were productive and candid, focusing on the current challenges that affect both countries—particularly those related to migration, economic strains, youth unemployment, security issues, and the rising tensions faced by African foreigners in South Africa. I firmly believe that Nigeria and South Africa, both prominent African nations, must enhance dialogue, bolster cooperation, and seek solutions based on justice, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law. In challenging times, leaders and citizens alike need to demonstrate responsible leadership, compassion, and restraint. We collectively stressed the importance of law-abiding behaviour, avoiding violence, resisting hate or provocation, and allowing lawful institutions to address grievances through democratic and constitutional processes, regardless of the challenges we face. The progress of Africa hinges on our ability to create unity, foster economic inclusivity, invest in our communities, and uphold the dignity of every African, no matter where they live. -PO

Standing Up for Democracy Today, I joined fellow Nigerians, leaders, and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by National Chairman Sen. David Mark to participate in a peaceful "Save Democracy" protest. This event was not just an effort to protect our democracy; it was also a moment of reflection on how far we have fallen as a nation. We must resist the suffocation of our democracy by those who once claimed to have sacrificed to defend it, but are now doing everything possible to undermine it and silence opposition. History will not be kind to those who traded the struggle for democracy for the comfort of power. We will not remain silent, we will not be intimidated, and we will not surrender the future of this nation. The will of the people must prevail—stronger, louder, and impossible to suppress. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

Let us reflect, sincerely and without sentiment. In the past few days, the President has reportedly approved ₦3.3 trillion as a “full and final” payment for debts in the power sector. Yet, this is not the first time such approvals have been made. On May 17, 2024, ₦3.3 trillion was approved for the same purpose. On July 25, 2024, another ₦4 trillion bond was approved to settle similar debts. There have also been other approvals in between, all targeted at addressing the same power sector liabilities. This raises a fundamental question: were the previous approvals mere announcements without execution? ₦3.3 Trillion Again? Nigeria’s Power Crisis Without End During the 2023 campaign, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a clear promise: that if he failed to deliver stable electricity, Nigerians should not re-elect him. Today, the reality is that power supply has worsened, to the extent that there are even discussions about disconnecting the Presidential Villa from the national grid. Each time legitimate concerns are raised, what we see appears more like policy pronouncements than measurable progress. Now, again, we are confronted with another ₦3.3 trillion approval to settle power sector debts. These debts were largely accumulated under successive administrations of the All Progressives Congress between 2015 and 2025. This raises serious concerns about accountability, transparency, and effectiveness in public financial management. It is important to note that government institutions and agencies, including the Presidential Villa owe a significant portion of these debts. Year after year, budgets were made and funds appropriated. Why then were these obligations not settled when due? And from what source will this new payment be made? Are we resorting once more to borrowing to service inefficiencies? Key questions remain unanswered: How did the debt accrue? What is the actual total debt in the power sector? Which components of the debts are due to operators’ inefficiency and should be borne by them? Why have previous approvals not translated into tangible improvements? Who are the real beneficiaries of these repeated payments? Is the ₦3.3 trillion approved on April 6, 2026, the same as the ₦3.3 trillion approved in May 2024, and how does it relate to the ₦4 trillion bond approved in July 2024? Nigeria must move beyond recycled announcements and confront the power sector crisis with sincerity, transparency, and decisive reforms. Until we do so, we will remain trapped in a cycle of debt and darkness. But with discipline, accountability, and the right leadership, a new Nigeria is still possible. -PO

ADC National Youth Leader - Balarabe Rufai@BalarabeRufai_

ADC YOUTH WING ISSUES 3DAYS ULTIMATUM TO INEC: RESTORE DEMOCRACY OR FACE NATIONWIDE CIVIC ACTION FULL TEXT OF PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE YOUTH WING OF THE AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS ADC, AT THE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS,FCT ABUJA. Date: Monday 6th April, 2026 Gentlemen of the Press, Fellow Nigerian Youths, Distinguished Citizens, Nigeria is under democratic siege. What should have been a steady consolidation of 27 uninterrupted years of civil rule since 1999 is now being deliberately undermined by those entrusted to protect it. Institutions meant to defend the will of the people are now being compromised, weakened, and weaponized against democracy itself. Let us be clear, this is not a warning, this is a crisis. As Mallam Aminu Kano once warned, “The democratic humanism of the future can only be built on the ruins of the present corrupt and decaying system.” Today, that decay is no longer hidden. It is active, deliberate and also dangerous. On July 29, 2025, the African Democratic Congress held a lawful NEC meeting under the full supervision of INEC. That meeting dissolved the previous National Working Committee (NWC), produced a new leadership led by Senator David Mark. INEC received the outcome, verified the process, officially uploaded and recognized this leadership on September 9, 2025 There was: No dispute. No objection. No ambiguity. So, what changed? Power, Pressure and Political interference. Months later, individuals who had already resigned resurfaced to challenge a process they had no legal standing in. While the matter remains before the courts, the Court of Appeal ordered, Maintain status quo ante bellum, the last uncontested position. That position is clear, The leadership under Senator David Mark. Yet INEC chose to ignore established facts, disregard due process and unlawfully interpret a court order. Let it be stated unequivocally: INEC has no constitutional authority to interpret court orders. That duty belongs strictly to the courts. What INEC has done is not neutrality. It is complicity, partisanship and institutional sabotage. We ask the INEC Chairman directly: On what legal basis did INEC act on letters and an ex parte motion that has neither been heard nor determined by a court of competent jurisdiction? Why did INEC Act on pending motions? Rely on letters instead of binding court orders? Assume the powers of the Judiciary? This is not a mistake, but a violation of the Constitution. We respectfully call on the National Assembly to Exercise their constitutional oversight immediately, Investigate this grave breach, initiate appropriate actions, including the recall or removal of the INEC Chairman because time is of essence. Democracy must be defended with action, not silence. We urge the Judiciary to Clarify its orders to prevent manipulation, reassert its authority as the sole interpreter of the law, protect the integrity of Nigeria's legal system We commend the Armed Forces for defending Nigeria. However, we state clearly, the military must remain neutral and stay away from civic democratic actions. This is a civil and constitutional matter. Nigeria must not witness any attempt to use force against lawful democratic expression. To over 100 million youths of our dear Country, this is about our future, our voice, our democracy. We must not defend injustice nor normalize illegality. Together, let's stand now to defend our democracy or lose everything democracy represents. Out Position is very clear; The leadership inaugurated on July 29, 2025, led by Senator David Mark, remains the only legitimate leadership of the ADC. Any attempt to alter this without a final court judgment is illegal, null, void and unacceptable. We hereby issue a 3DAYS ULTIMATUM TO INEC to: Immediately restore the Senator David Mark-led leadership on its official portal. Publicly apologize to Nigerians for its unconstitutional and partisan conduct.
