🧵: PCA and Geographical Space I ran a West Eurasian PCA using EIGENSOFT's smartpca on the AADR / Reich Lab v62 HO dataset, including my x30 yseq sample (Vict). In the PCA below, my position falls further west of the Albanian/Balkan cluster and inside the North Itlaian cluster.

It's quite telling how much Roman authors differ in tone when describing the very submissive Thracians and their kangz (positive) compared to the disobedient Illyrians (highly negative). See Tacitus' description of Rhoemetalces I.

@hillurian @leuziferr There seems to be a void in your understanding here, The roman samples are found almost exclusively in Croatia and Serbia. IK what caused that however.

@leuziferr @ObliterVict It's not even a Y-DNA chart for a single ancient population but a graph for the entire aDNA Balkans from '22 Olalde paper. The E1b-V13 samples in that Iron Age graph are the Thracians from Kapitan Andreevo while the J-L283 are all Illyrian samples.

Not published yet, but data is available. Older Eastern Neandertals in the Altai region and younger Western Neandertals in Europe were as differentiated as the most differentiated present-day human populations worldwide. "High coverage genome of the Denisova 17 Neandertal" ebi.ac.uk/ena/browser/vi…

Cousin marriage in the Middle East is often attributed to Islam. Ancient DNA suggests the practice may predate Islam by millennia. Very long ROHs (the genomic signature of close-kin unions) are strongly associated with Iran/MENA ancestry. New post: davidepiffer.com/p/modern-middl…

🧵: Variation The final figure projects Cinamak_BA_IA, a Bronze/Iron Age population from northern Albania. Modern Albanians share the same components but in different proportions; my PCA shift toward Cinamak suggests stronger affinity to this older Balkan substrate.

🧵: PC1/2 vs KM I then compared geographic distance from Albania vs genetic centroid distance from my PCA position. Since I am Albanian, Albania serves as the geographic reference point. The results show genetic distance generally increases with distance from Albania.

@Arberikon Cherry-picking a 140-year-old travelogue to prop up ethnic superiority claims is weak. Knight’s biased praise ignores his own balanced notes elsewhere. Selective quoting and loaded terms like “nobler race” just reveal nationalist distortion, not history.

in his 1879 travels to Albania, E. F. Knight compared Albanians and Montenegrins and concluded that the Albanian was more industrious, more intellectual, and “in every way of a finer, nobler race, than his much belauded hereditary foe.”

Afanasievo and Andronovo contributed to the formation of the eastern and western Tianshan populations during the Iron Age. “The incoming East Asian millet farmers, along with Western Steppe herders characterized by Afanasievo, contributed to the formation of the eastern Tianshan populations during the Iron Age, which is consistent with archaeological findings of painted pottery and pastoral subsistence in this area. The genetic affinity to East Asian millet farmers in the eastern Tianshan increased over time, likely reflecting geographic proximity and geopolitical changes. In contrast, in line with archaeological observations, the Iron Age individuals in the western Tianshan derived their Steppe-related ancestry from populations associated with the Andronovo culture”

@nrken19 There’s quite a lot going on with Akbari and it’s adding a lot of nuance to J-L283. For example, J-L283>Z622 was found in an Armenian MLBA profile alongside R-Z2103>M12149. Adds onto its definitive steppe origin.

Amongst the un-labeled samples of the Akbari 2026 anonymized datasets there have been a plethora of BA-IA Balkan related samples. Here are I43811 under E-V13>Z5018>FGC11451 and I44248 under E-V13>Z5017>CTS9320 Combined these lineages are 12% of the Albanian Y-Chr genepool.
