The Abandoned Property saga did not occur in any part of the Western Region or the Midwest. I have already detailed the case of Chief Alex Ekwueme, whose children I know and are still alive, with one living close to me in California. Although he was not really friends with Otunba Subomi Balogun, per se, they lived close to each other. Just before the outbreak of the civil war, Alex Ekwueme left Lagos for the Eastern Region, like most prudent Igbos. After the war, he returned to Lagos and, surprisingly, found his house in a renovated condition. While he was wondering what had happened, his neighbour, Mr Subomi Balogun, as he then was, approached him and handed over his back rent in cash. Chief Ekwueme's children are still alive and can attest to this. In fact, you know there is great enmity between Brigadier Godwin Alabi-Isama and General Olusegun Obasanjo. How did that start? It was because then Colonel Obasanjo ordered his men not to buy properties from the liberated Biafrans because it would be exploitation. He said that since they were desperate, they could not negotiate fairly. And any attempts to buy their property under such conditions would be exploitative. However, Alabi-Isama bought a Mercedes-Benz from a Biafran, and though the purchase was legal, it was immoral. For that, Colonel Obasanjo punished Isama by sending him away from the Third Marine Commando. The letter to that effect was published for the first time ever last year in Musikilu Mojeed's book, The Letter Man. Mojeed is the Publisher in Chief of Premium Times. Even the food given to the liberated Biafrans immediately after their liberation was free of charge, courtesy of Colonel Obasanjo, who defeated them. Then Colonel Benjamin Adekunle was worse. He shot Nigerian soldiers who looted from liberated Biafrans. Shockingly, the videos are still on YouTube. It was because it was Chief Obasanjo who militarily defeated the Biafrans that they were treated humanely after the war. If it had been Colonel Murtala Muhammad, it may have been a massacre. Colonel Obasanjo was so liberal that after defeating them, he still paid rent to the owners of houses in the liberated Biafra that his troops used as offices and quarters. However, for some reason known to them, Igbo-speaking persons in Rivers State claimed that they were no longer Igbo and took over properties belonging to the liberated Biafrans and declared that they were 'Abandoned Property'. If you peruse colonial documents from before Independence, you will see that people were assigned the ethnicity of Ibo, now known as Igbo. It was after the war that they took on another ethnic identity that I do not want to mention here. It has nothing to do with the West or the Midwest.
