Shin Game Design (1995), by Pokemon creator Satoshi Tajiri, represents the very first time the general public could read a detailed description of Pokémon.
Published in December 1995 by Enix this was the first retail product to use the name Pocket Monsters. Approximately 15,000 copies initially; it was never mass-reprinted in its original form.
It hit shelves two months before the first Pokémon games (Red & Green) were released in Japan (February 27, 1996). It predates the first Pokémon manga (CoroCoro), the first TCG cards (Media Factory/Bandai), and the anime.
Most of the 160 page book is Tajiri's thoughts on popular games of the day such as Super Mario Brothers.
4 pages, 156-159 are dedicated to Pokemon where Tajiri explains the Pokemon concept to gamers and designers. It talks about game mechanics, the pokedex, battling, and pokemon trading systems. Tajiri describes his thought process with anchoring Pokemon to the gameboy link cable capability. There are early map sketches. It also describes Tajiri's inspiration for pokemon from Japanese ideas of Menko and Kaiju. It is the definitive pre-history document, published months before the games existed on store shelves.
The book itself is an incredible piece of art. The blue dust jacket features a mosaic of 45 different original 8-bit development sprites, including early versions of Rhydon and Gastly, and other items, characters and locations.
Because it was a niche book for game designers rather than a children's book, most copies were likely discarded or damaged over the last 30 years.
Outside of Pokémon, the book contains Tajiri’s critiques and design theories on classic games like Space Invaders and The Legend of Zelda, providing a blueprint for Game Freak's design philosophy.
Surprisingly I have seen a few of these texts still available on ebay
Prior to Shin Game Design there are a rare few other public mentions or allusions to Pokemon/Pocket Monsters
- 1993 Game Freak Business Card: Featured Satoshi Tajiri’s contact info alongside hand-drawn sketches of Capsule Monsters
- An early 1995 Weekly Famitsu (issue 363) magazine mentions teased the upcoming Pocket Monster Game Boy title
- 1995 Shoshinkai (Spaceworld) Flyer advertising the game's upcoming release, featuring early Sugimori art and the "Pocket Monsters" logo.

@AquaticXCP @w4nkie @Decentralizd Money well spent. Your grandkids will cherish this photo for generations
English

@w4nkie @OccupyRedRobin @Decentralizd I took out a HELOC on my apartment, and then bought my mom a house and took a HELOC out on that and the combination of those loans plus liquidating my ethereum assets allowed for this titty signature & private meet and greet

This lucky man @AquaticXCP met one of his heroes today here in Vegas.
You could have done the same, but you’re poor and straight and probably scared to meet me because I’m so famous (and richer than you)
Sucks to suck i guess (not for him)

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna says the American public is on the verge of getting long awaited answers, and hints proof of non human life is about to be revealed, describing them as “interdimensional beings.”
Luna says she has personally witnessed things she cannot explain and that the public will soon have to “see them for themselves” and draw their own conclusions.
“I have observed things that are of non human origin and creation.”
“I don’t call them aliens.”
