people are riled up about @ZorpZK's 'fair launch' of @nockchain . some of this is probably their fault for not more proactively defining 'fair'. personally, i take the slant that "life isn't fair", therefore when someone says 'fair', i do some work to see what they actually mean by that. but not everybody operates that way. instead they look at 'fair' and go "oooo, somebody is going to give me free shit that I won't have to work for and it will just be doled out to me for my mere existence." for some, that is their definition of 'fair', and anything that goes against that results in panicked screeching. you see it from boomers who think it would be 'unfair' to stop paying their social security even though there is no money, they never created the next generation, and they spent the last 40 years in some retarded ass political project that seems to be basically intent on raiding the wealth of future generations of americans. and of course we are seeing around the nockchain launch from shitcoin miners around the world who thought, "oh I can just throw assloads of compute at this new zk l1 and because I already have servers and just by dint of hearing about this opportunity I have a right to the spoils." before continuing too far, it's worth making some qualifying statements: i am a zorp investor. a small one, by way of a small stake in @OctuVentures which has a small stake in zorp. in some quasi transitive sense this makes me a bagholder of $NOCK futures or something. by way of my octu stake, i am also an investor in @SWPSCO, a nockchain infra company working on mining pools. that all said, i am not a huge stakeholder in these things and i don't have any privileged information about their operations--but I am *paying attention*. which is kinda what this piece is all about. zorp's mission since they started has been to do to zkps what bitcoin did to sha256 hashing: grow the number of proofs and drive the cost down, asymptotically towards zero. for people who are barely listening, they look at Nockchain and go "oooo, a shitcoin to mine with my spare compute and dump on retail to pay my energy costs and make a little profit." but they miss the forest for the trees. nockchain is incidental. a single piece of the puzzle, or single piece on the board. i mean, they have been telling people this for years at this point, but for some reason people just think that the talk of civilizational infrastructure and verifiable compute is just marketing talk in order to grow hype for their blockchain. if you just take them at their word (you should take people at their word in life; if you listen--i mean actually listen--people will tell you what they want) on this one fact, everything else about their strategy is easy to deduce and all the aesthetics-poasting and other discussion is just additional hints to understand how to play the game. for those who need it fully explained to them: 1. we need civilizational infrastructure 2. this requires verifiable compute 3. zkps are too expensive for wide scale use 4. nock offers an isa for cheap & performant zkps 5. pow blockchain competition drives down compute costs 6. open access drives fervent competition 7. participation trophies reduce competition 8. nockchain 'fair launch' is designed to inspire competition 9. the competition isn't 'how much compute do you have access to' now, there are plenty of 'fair' critiques about the details of the launch, the messsaging, etc. but it is hardly surprising that the released code was in need of improvement. again, the point is the competition, not "zorp gets really good a generating nock zkps". What are things that they *possibly could* have done 'better' (from my perspective as of today)? - better estimates on initial difficulty settings - better guidance on recommended machines - more clear statements on the "reference implementation" being anemic for actual mining - a reference implementation capable of mining *some* blocks - better clarity on their own definition of fairness how do I know these things could have been better? because there are other people who have been paying attention to the project who didn't pick up on the implications being made and therefore didn't infer what the actual competition is. but I will also note that this is a practice in monday morning quarterbacking. the fact that they released nockchain as a 'fair launch' where fair means no pre-mine, anyone in the world can participate, permissionless PoW blockchain, means that any of those critiques also could have gone 'the wrong way' where 'wrong' is defined as "would kill the mission of building verifiable compute for civilizational infrastructure". and I'll also note, that they didn't totally fail in their aim to create competition. here's where I am a party to privileged information: There are other teams that are not associated with zorp which have been working on optimizing the reference implementation and aim to compete in the game of nock zkps themselves. no, i won't tell you who. no, i won't tell you when. but the point is that there are people out there that aren't just complaining in the telegram that they didn't just get an "i'm a large compute controller and therefore deserve a spiritual airdrop." so if you catch yourself about to complain about this, remember that this is a proof of work competition and in words of eric hughes: cypherpunks write code

Urbit's history is: people trying to do a safe (but unurbity) thing, it failing and taking more time and money than it would have taken to just do the urbity thing, followed by doing the urbity thing and it working the first time.
