**Project '44 is free. Here's what that actually costs.** A note to our community, because there's been some confusion going around. Project '44 is free. It has been free for over 8 years. Everything you use on the site today will remain free. Full stop. What some of you have seen is our Patreon — an optional way for supporters to chip in and get early access to the new site we're currently rebuilding. That's it. A few things worth saying out loud, because I think people assume we're government funded or sitting on some big grant. We're not. We had grants in the early years to get this off the ground. Those ended long ago. Everything since has been built by a small team and a lot of volunteer sweat: • 150,000+ pages of war diaries are scanned and searchable on LAC today because our team organized the effort and pushed for it. I have the letter from Library and Archives Canada to prove it. • 40+ volunteers have put in well over 1,000 hours OCRing and editing those diaries so you can actually read them. • I've personally spent hundreds of hours at LAC scanning war diaries and over 400 maps. • The original platform took 3 years to build from scratch because nothing like it existed. • The rebuild we're working on now is approaching a year and a half of near-constant work. I'm writing this from the Netherlands, where I've been coding with our lead developer past midnight every night for the last two weeks. And that's before you count the nonprofit admin, the grant writing (most of them rejected), the stakeholder meetings, the social media, the bookkeeping, the volunteer coordination. The stuff nobody sees. I want to be transparent about one thing: yes, we do plan to eventually offer a premium tier on the new site. But let me be crystal clear about what that means — and what it doesn't. Everything currently on Project '44 stays free. The maps, the units, the war diaries, the photos, the core platform you know. None of that moves behind a paywall. Ever. Premium will be additional tools built on top for power users — things like advanced search, saved maps and research workspaces, overlays, historical aerial imagery, better basemaps. Tools that don't exist today, for researchers and serious enthusiasts who want to go deeper. If you only want what's on Project '44 right now, you'll have it. Free. Forever. None of this is a complaint. I love this project. Our team loves this project. We do it because the history matters and the veterans matter. But please — free to use is not the same as free to make. Somebody is paying the cost. For 8 years it's been us, our volunteers, and the supporters on Patreon who understand what goes into it. The site stays free. Thanks to everyone who gets it.
