Little Phoenix and Faith have moved into the executive lawn suite we’ve built them. After spending years living in cages neglected we thought they’d like the grass. They are recovering and decompressing very well. Their tails can’t stop wagging (1/5) 🧵

When my A-Level results came out in 1996 I was in the middle of recording my bands debut album with hotshot LA producer Howard Benson. He’d just worked with Motorhead and Ice T and now he was working with us - a bunch of kids from Maghull who still lived at their mums. I strutted into school in my aviator shades, casually glanced at my sub-par results before waltzing back out with my brand new girlfriend in tow. A-levels didn’t matter to me. I was gonna be a rock star. We’d signed a record deal aged 17 (I had to resign from my beloved paper round) and Kerrang magazine had declared that we’d be ‘one of the biggest bands in the country by the end of the year.’ So that was us set. Right? Unfortunately the story soon took a familiar turn. Contracts were anulled, money was stolen and before I knew it I was back at the paper shop asking for my fluorescent bag back. I had crap hair anyway. So this is not one of those ‘hey, kids - I messed up my A-Levels and look at me now!’ posts. But what I can share from my rollercoaster adolescent experience is that following a dream, any dream is exhilarating. I’ll never forgot those special moments where the five of us felt (knew, even) that we were gonna make it. We didn’t make it. Our dream fell apart like wet bread. But my god, I’m glad we tried. Exams are useful. Qualifications lead to opportunity. But finding something to believe in? That's everything. (June 1997 & June 2023. I’m second from the left on both.)
