I convinced my client in Nigeria to build with earth instead of concrete. Here’s why that decision changes everything:

@IamBlack_Love7 I'm still working on the details but base on my estimate they seem to be about the same price

@vangeorgh In a European settings, It could work, if the glass is facing the north and not exposed fully south. In Africa, the sun, My current office gets literally no sunlight all year. It can work for them, not for US

4. And this is where our role as architect matters. It's not just about designing but guiding decisions that impact cost, comfort, and long-term performance. It’s about building better with what’s already available. More to come as the project progresses.

3. The biggest challenge wasn’t really technical. It was the perception. Convincing the clients that earth is not “low quality”, but a smart and durable solution. Other 2 other clients opted for concrete blocks due to this perception. Winning one client is enough for a start

@vangeorgh They say "Behind every good architect is a good client" It feels good when the client "buys" into your vision and you are able to push eachother to achieve a good project. This is not bad regardless

Compressed earth blocks is one of the ways to build in tropical climates like Nigeria. Made from local soil. Low energy. High thermal performance.

As an Architect working between Europe & Africa. My goal is to combine my european experience with my African culture & values. Technical precision & environmentally grounded. I design projects that use local materials, respond to climate, remain economically & socially relevant.

There’s something very compelling about seeing materials applied beyond their usual context

@pectus_7 @asemota Nobody is excusing incompetence. Nigeria was never designed to work no matter how hard the government tries. You go old and Nigeria no go still work. Go ask your papa make he tell you how dem take complain like you dey complain now. Communication remains our greatest barrier.

I still don't understand how a country next door to Nigeria was able to avoid all the “anyhowness” in Nigeria and become a model African nation. Each time I visit Benin, I am always impressed by something new. They are making progress while Nigeria regresses.

In Benin Republic 🇧🇯, the National Grid is so reliable that you can go six months or more without a single power outage, not even for a second.

Btw, visibility goes beyond just posting visualizations 🧏🏼‍♂️ Talk about your design process Talk about your spatial layout and the thinking behind it Talk about your building performance Talk about climate responsiveness As an Architect, you’re a problem-solver first before anything else..
LMD (Arc.)@Layemie001

The most visible architects always get the job, not the best architects. If nobody knows you, you won't get the job. Clients hire people by recommendations and visibility.
