After a frank discussion with the Lord Chancellor, I remain opposed to eroding trial by jury. Today, I will abstain at 2nd Reading and push amendments to remove the worst parts. Today isn’t the day to defeat the Government, but we will win the argument as the Bill progresses.

Agreed. But nor should you deserve a vote because you’ve been a second/third-rate cabinet minister but greased up enough to a prime minister for him/her to send you to an unelected parliamentary chamber to do their bidding and live out your twilight years in comfort and status, lording it over the rest of us who had no say in your choice. No more democratic than hereditary.
Torsten Bell@TorstenBell

Hereditary peers out of the Lords at long long last - delivering the rather simple principle that you don’t deserve a vote in Parliament by virtue of which family your were born into gov.uk/government/new…

The Green Party has been consistent on our position for years. We support the Iranian people in their struggle against the brutal Regime. And we oppose illegal bombing from the USA and Israel that has already killed countless civilians and risks an all out Regional war.

@DrChrisParry @RoyalAirForce @BritishArmy It rewinds to over ambition. If you consider the point of those two carriers? To project force by air we have tankers and bases. They suck the money and manpower out of the rest of the navy. Serve no actual useful purpose. Because if them we can't afford enough surface fleet

So a Prime Minister fails to anticipate the need to send a Type 45 destroyer to defend Cyprus, based on whose military advice? A CDS who is an @RoyalAirForce officer and a PJHQ led by a @BritishArmy officer? Has the Joint model failed here?

@OldResidents The Iranian Revolution reshaped the region, yes — but modern terrorism can’t be pinned on Iran alone. Groups like al-Qaeda emerged from different ideological and geopolitical roots. History is more complex than a single cause.

I think we forget how much world events were shaped by the Iranians. It emboldened Islamic Terrorism world wide which didn't exist in late numbers prior to 1979. I lot of people have died because of their direct and indirect influence. Illegal war? Really.

I’m a landlord. It’s a tough business. I had a tenant, Mr. Alvarez. Never late on rent for 5 years. Then, the checks stopped. I went to his apartment. He didn’t open the door. I used my key. The apartment was empty. No furniture. Just a mattress on the floor and Mr. Alvarez sitting on it. “I’m sorry,” he said, looking down. “My wife got sick. The medication… I sold everything. I’ll leave today.” I looked at the empty room. I went to my truck. I grabbed my tools. “I’m not kicking you out,” I said. “But I am raising the rent.” He looked terrified. “I’m raising it to $0 for the next six months.” He started to cry. “And,” I added, “I’ve got an extra sofa in storage. And a table. Let’s get this place looking like a home again.” That was three years ago. His wife recovered. He’s back on his feet. He insists on paying me double rent now to "pay back the debt." I put the extra money into a fund for other tenants who struggle. A roof over someone’s head is a business. Keeping a roof over their head when they’re drowning? That’s a duty. Anonymous participant

Good historical information. I've never been to the Middle East but my dad worked on many of the oil and gas projects especially in Libya. My understanding of the difference between Arabs and Persians was formed because I have a friend whose father was an Iranian test pilot on the F4 purchase. He married an American and all of their kids but one was born in Iran. Most of their family got out before 1979.

I am not a jingoist by any stretch of the word. Moreover, my daughter is on the USS Lincoln as we speak. I have skin in this game. I have read (and heard) a lot of BS about whether or not we should be in Iran. Let me be clear... I've been a SME on Iran for 25÷ years. I speak Persian Farsi, Dari, Balochi, and Tajik. I've been to Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and yes... Iran. There are few who know Iran as "intimately" as I do. The reasons for this war are nuanced and complicated, but one thing is clear as day... the Iranian people (by and large) are good people and they just want to have the same liberty and freedom we have. Their women and girls want to be able to go out into public without having to fear if they'll be arrested and beaten (or even killed) by the "Virtue Police". If you cannot see that, and you cannot support the liberation of a people that have been brutally oppressed for 47+ years... then you have no humanity and you and I are not the same. Our past with Iran is not a good one (Operation Ajax or Iran Contra)... but a vast majority of the Iranians (and Americans) today have no idea why the relationship between our two countries soured in the first place. A vast majority of Iranians have only ever known abject tyranny and Islamic brutally... they love America. I will not debate this with anyone. Either get on team America and support the liberation of a brutalized people... or STFU and continue to wallow in your miserable hypocrisy and enjoy freedom you never had to earn or fight for. God Bless America. God Bless our Men and Women in Uniform. I said what I said. 🔥🇺🇸🇺🇸🔥

You don’t have to like Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to think there’s something off about his treatment. He has been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion without facing a single day before a court of law. This is not justice, says Luke Gittos buff.ly/poGUAYM

I just voted to lift the two-child cap - a policy introduced by the Tories which punishes children who were born into a poor family. Nigel Farage wants to keep it and instead give tax breaks to foreign billionaires. I know whose side I'm on.
