@jsnyder81 It's because all the industry knows how to sell is increased (theoretical) throughput which vendors can write on their spec sheet/box. WiFi8 will have 32x32,640Mhz so throughput is increased by X regardless of whether even 8x8 is mass adopted

Wi-Fi 7 just makes me sad. Why do we continue to push technology that isn’t being adopted. 320MHz channels? 16x16 MIMO? Why do I need 16x16 MIMO when we see almost no adoption of 8x8? I wish the IEEE would focus on things that companies would actually build and benefit users.

You think you want more Mbit/s, but what you really want is lower latency

@jlivingood @mtaht @SpaceXStarlink there are some openings (at least in Europe) for reasonable traffic mgmt where all traffic of a certain type is treated equally and the measure is "reasonable". Of course, it is difficult to clearly interpret what that means

@runarorama The default state of everything is terrible. The real question is how some things get to be not terrible, and whether we can repeat it.

@mtaht @mikeconlow I can confirm that I've heard this worry from with European ISPs (also L4S, LLD, WMM and any QoS) From the trenches of the war of convincing ISPs to implement Low Latency solutions, it always falls back on their lack on financial incentives

@mikeconlow I worry that somehow, the idea of "fair queuing", will get twisted up with being not net neutral, which is a huge stretch, IMHO, and easily demonstrated to be false by a few billion devices today, but that's lawyers for ya.

@disruptivedean FYI, the latency numbers (for WiFi5/6) in this figure does not match with real-life numbers under working conditions. (Or maybe, if you disregard the queueing before the WiFi egress)

WIFi7 should be able to get reliably sub-1ms latencies (with various optional tweaks)

Broadband: the bigger picture… Folks tend to over-focus on near-term changes in tech & business – missing forest for the trees. This past week I think I just saw a preview of what I think will be the biggest leap forward since broadband was created. (this is my personal take) 🧵
