@ThatEricAlper Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy looks in the witch's crystal ball and sees Auntie Em and the Guys looking for her, but they can't see her. Don't know why this was so scary.

Even at Chicago, students are told their choice of professor is irrelevant: it shouldn’t matter to you who is teaching you. This is how institutions become vulnerable to AI disruption. If it doesn’t matter who is teaching the class, why not AI?
The Chicago Maroon@ChicagoMaroon

Professors’ names will no longer be visible to students pre-registering for social science and civilization studies Core courses beginning with autumn quarter 2026, several professors in the Social Sciences Collegiate Division told the Maroon. chicagomaroon.com/52530/news/sos…

@HistorianUSA1 Maybe to some of us the issue is whether some children have a right to ruin the pool time for the rest of us, including other children.

HOA meeting just dropped the single greatest rule in human history 😂 “Children are permitted… but it’s the intensity of the splashing. When splashing becomes continuous, it stops being play. It becomes activity. And activity at that level… is shared.” Ma’am, you didn’t just attend an HOA meeting. You ascended to Peak Karen and invented Splash Marxism. Kids out here living their best chaotic summer lives and this visor-wearing philosopher is in the back doing physics equations on cannonballs like she’s the fun police’s Chief Justice. Next month: “The velocity of cannonball entries violates Section 4.2.7 of the covenants. Fines will be assessed per giggle decibel.” These people would fine the ocean for waves. ABOLISH HOAs. Your kids deserve to splash like absolute degenerates without filing a 47-page Environmental Impact Report. Fight me, Karen. I’m bringing the Super Soaker. 🏊‍♂️💦😂

@Halo_chains No. Unless she paid for your private schools on the understanding that it was just a loan. IDK, maybe you should consider how you want your kids to treat you when they are in their 30s, and go by that.

My mom wants all three of us, M, F, F, in our 30s to give her $300 a month each. She said this is for her retirement and that this is our duty. I would be fine with this if she had no income but she has multiple properties she rents out that earns more than we do every month. All three of us don’t live at home and have children to take care of. My sisters are both stay at home moms. Their husbands will be the ones to pay this. Here is some of our conversation: I asked if she gives her parents money every month and she said no but she has given money to them before. I told her we are all raising kids, paying rent, the economy is terrible. Her response was $300 is not much. The average worker here earns $1000 a month. I told her I would never tax my kids like this while they’re trying to build their lives. Her response is that it’s our duty as her children. To try and be non biased she did spend a lot of money sending us to private school. In return I do have a decent job earning higher than the average. I feel like this is just pure greed. Would I be the asshole for refusing?

@BobGolen I do that, too. It's a small weirdness. You switch the one, and if nothing happens, you switch the other. Maybe the price of being wrong is just too low.

When rich CEOs brag about how many hours they work, remember that they have servants who clean their homes, cook their meals, and do their shopping. When you have to do these things yourself, it doesn't count as working, mysteriously.

@Johnfinney8 When I was her age, I used to LOVE being absent, because when I was at home I could cut up the cardboard from the cereal boxes, fold it into 3d shapes, and make miniature furniture. Classrooms today seem short on the palpable and long on the digital.

7 yr old granddaughter deeply engaged for 2 hours making a model living room using at hand materials. Young children spend much of their leisure time making. There doesn’t seem to be a making curriculum in school.

I am old. I keep hearing "AI" tossed around like everybody but me knows what it means, but hearing various pundits and posts, it seems like y'all are talking about different AI's. Wish you would be more specific. I just wanted to know how long eggs will keep in the fridge.

Everything on political tv is focused on Trump, but he's not on the ballot for Mid-terms. PLEASE, Dems: Look at the ballot, whatever state you're in. Is there ANYTHING on there that tells the underinformed who stands for what? It's time to look at the real voting experience!

If you read to your grandchildren this weekend, even for ten minutes, you did something the school system cannot do. You gave them a memory of reading that has nothing to do with assessment. That memory is what makes lifelong readers.

I still read aloud to my teens. I just finished reading CS Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters aloud to them. We had great discussions. When I was a high school teacher, I read aloud to my students. They looked forward to Read-Aloud Fridays.
MartinCothran@MartinCothran

We should read aloud in class at least until the 4th or 5th grade. I also read to my kids at home every night until they left home. It is one of my kids most cherished memories. Now they read to their kids too.

I used to think squeezing the toothpaste from the middle of the tube was potential grounds for divorce. Now I know that part of her brain is broken and is never fixing. So I patiently squeeze what’s in back up to the front. Like Jesus intended. And then apply to the brush.
