Our latest work in collaboration with the group of Jeroen van Zon. The transcription factor DAF-16/FOXO moves in and out of the nucleus in a strikingly synchronous manner across cells, regulating organismal growth.

In Drosophila, tissue damage during development also leads to temporal suppression of further developmental events to avoid desynchronization. Our work suggests that this type of mechanism might be widespread, surveilling the course of development even in optimal conditions (6/6)

This means that synchronous development requires active mechanisms to compensate for inherent variability between timers. Transient arrest also protects from larger desynchrony between timers, as that resulting from unequal impact of nutrient sensing pathways on the timers (5/6).
