I’m not sure we’re talking about the same thing. I’m saying that the things that elite pitchers do that are “different” from one another are unlikely to be important to mechanics. Such as if you bring your arms over your head in your windup. Or point your toe up or down as you lift your leg, etc.

If you wanna analyze good pitching mechanics, you should basically never look at someone in their 20s. A young pitcher can get away with so many things that will eventually derail them because they have a fresh set of tendons, ligaments, and nerves to degenerate. Look at the guys who do it all for a decade. They’ve proven they have all the components you should be interested in.

@RobertStock6 @GoJags5528 Couldn't one argue they're harmful in the long run though? (Because they'll lose velo) Though in pitching it can be helpful in the short run (having unique mechanics is more deceptive)

@OnePitchOneSoul @GoJags5528 "Half the distinguishing qualities of the eminent are but exaggerated defects." - had to look it up haha. That certainly applies here, but I’d say “unimportant” rather than actually harmful.

@GoJags5528 @OnePitchOneSoul All of them! You want to try and look at the best of the best and find the similarities, and that tells you what you should be trying to do too. Whereas if one guy does something unique, that’s not (probably) not an integral part of good mechanics.

Wrote a pretty personal blog about how accomplishing some of my big goals has actually made me feel and how I've learned to be more grounded since. If you're like me and you dream pretty big but realizing those dreams doesn't feel how you expected, maybe this will help \/ \/ \/

@BachTalk1 What's VAA after adjusting movement for arm angle?

VAA: Overhyped or misunderstood? Vertical Approach Angle (VAA) = the angle the ball enters the strike zone. Flatter VAA (closer to 0) on fastballs makes them harder to lift. Steeper VAA on breaking balls creates more swing-through. It's not overhyped — it's just one piece of the puzzle alongside velocity, movement, and location. Data via @mlbpitchprofiler #MLB #Statcast

@srbrown70 So is the grading out better this spring just overfitting (or I guess less underfitting)?

don't know how i missed this but the slider isn't working for his forkball because there's not enough of those pitch types thrown to compare him to average, so here's the info in table form

Roki's arsenal is grading out better this spring vs last season. StuffPro likes the SL over last season's SW and likes some velo coming back to the four-seam

Really cool study. In short, you can predict pitch type (81%) from body alone pre ball release. I imagine stuff like this is pretty fundamental to internal team “deception” scores? Also curious about pairing this with hitter gaze analysis…🧵
Stephen Sutton-Brown@srbrown70

studying ball flight only tells you so much about how batters detect which pitch type is coming. in games they use a ton of biomechanical info from the pitcher's delivery as well to give them a strong prior ahead of ball release. cool paper studying that: arxiv.org/abs/2603.04874…

Thrilled that our paper, B.A.I.L.I.F.F., won Best Paper at CUCAI. It introduces a framework for auditing bias in AI-driven legal proceedings, showing that fair-looking verdicts can still mask unequal trials. Paper: drive.google.com/file/d/1qk9ddu…

LSU righty Cooper Moore has one of the most fascinating fastballs I saw this weekend. A 6-footer, launching from 77 inches, generating 7.5 vert on a 1700 rpm sinker? Up to 94. Parried with a near perfectly mirrored mid-80s diving changeup? Super, super funky. Good luck.

I actually think elite athletes who are beginners in the weightroom can do far better than 2.5lbs/month, they basically get to enjoy the "muscle memory" effect because of high motor unit recruitment + little hypertrophy (similar to a detrained lifter) Obviously we'll never find studies for this exact case but plenty of anecdotes though

Talked to a pair of strength folks on this, but yeah, lean muscle gain is capped in the 2-2.5lb per month area. So if you add 20lb in 4 months, you're probably looking at ~50% lean muscle gain (8-10lb). Let's get DEXA scan results in Baseball Savant! 😉 @mike_petriello
Brent Rooker@Brent_Rooker25

A few reminders for everyone as guys start reporting to camp: 1. No one in the locker room cares at all if you show up with your stuff in your old team’s bag. 2. It is pretty much physically impossible to gain “15-20 lbs of muscle” in 4 months of offseason training.
