Stop dangling reform from a stick knowing that it requires an unreachable majority, or nuking the filibuster, which turns any reform into a bandaid.

Let’s say President Newsom goes scorched earth. Bends & breaks the rules. Trump & his admin go to prison. He spends all his capital doing this, the public disapproves of it, and doesn’t pass reforms. Dems lose in 2030 and 2032. GOP trifecta. Trump and his cabinet are pardoned.

@hutchinson @Ampersannd This admin will be pardoned by Trump. They will all get off scott-free, and there is nothing anyone at the federal level can do about it. As for reforms, what would Project 2025 have been without the filibuster? You don't think they do that when they get back in?

If you’re not proposing ways to block republicans from power, then I don’t really know what is being debated here. The way political parties build trust with voters is by governing competently and delivering good policies that resonate with voters. But if the voters decide they want to elect a criminal that corruptly enriched themselves, they get to do that. Forcing a Nuremberg 2.0 situation that is outside of the boundaries of law and the constitution is not going to prevent that from happening in the future. Reforms can and do help in a way that is lasting and meaningful. So democrats should probably do those things. And as far as the filibuster goes, I do not see it as an inherently liberal norm. Quite the opposite tbh. It blocks things that have broad support from the public, so I think it should go.

I'm working off the basis they will hold power again, and any decisions made now will affect us the next time they do. What happened to harm reduction? We don't reduce harm by removing guardrails to authoritarianism.
