@MarkBerry915 @hutchinson In fact, I'll do you one better. You can go a few tweets up and see me explicitly arguing to do exactly that. Voting for the party that is combatting the fascists.

@OneTwoManyFew @hutchinson So then if you do what's needed to fight fascist the obvious action to the is voting for Dems in the general, right?

If it’s a conversation about expectations, it’s baffling why you guys would leave out any consideration of what you reasonably expected would happen during a second Trump presidency. Did you even think about that at all, or do expectations only apply to democrats?
genocommie@genocommie

@hutchinson How have you twisted the social contract so much in your mind that the people expecting something for their vote and people warning of that are now the same as a gaslighting, abusive spouse?

@MarkBerry915 @hutchinson You won't even entertain the question. We do what we need to combat fascists, that includes voting for who fights them in a 2 party system. My question was about long term strategy, you won't answer it. Chasing the middle while GOP while they race to their flank has one outcome.

@OneTwoManyFew @hutchinson Your apology doesn't apply. General elections are dichotomies. Only two choices. Dems are fighting to flip seats from red to blue. The Dems are the one pulling the rope against republicans. Leftist are having a tantrum If you want someone else pulling the rope, win primaries

@OneTwoManyFew @hutchinson What are further left candidates doing to "earn" votes. Have they done any self reflection on why they keep losing primaries?

@MarkBerry915 @hutchinson You yourself said about centered positions, so you're prioritising chasing flags, all I'm asking is for you to follow the analogy through. Don't misdirect at leftists, because you're not advocating for pulling. You want to chase.

@MarkBerry915 @hutchinson An analogy. It's a tug of war. You've got a red team and a a blue team. The median voter is the flag on the rope. The red team is tugging as hard as they can, the flag towards them. Meanwhile, the Blue team is chasing the flag. What is the consequence of this ongoing pattern?

@OneTwoManyFew @hutchinson Im going with your logic, further left candidates simply aren't earning the votes of individuals in the primaries. They should do some self reflection on why they keep losing, correct? Maybe they should adopt some more centered positions.

@time_waster2 @hutchinson America isn't the world. When I say fix YOUR shit, I mean it's not my shit. We are passengers on this nightmare ride you put us on, so I don't have any love or sympathy for your country. You've fucked it. Unfuck it, then we can talk about working towards reconciling. Not before.

@time_waster2 @hutchinson I'm not educating Americans when they're voting to deconstruct their own education system, why should I do it for free? Americans en masse went out to vote and fuck themselves and the rest of the world. They don't get my sympathy, fix your shit, then maybe we can talk.

@MarkBerry915 @hutchinson In the primary, voters are bombarded with threats of unelectability when someone dares suggest something that might help the working class. We have to appeal to the middle, the donor class, remember? Don't rock the boat.

@time_waster2 @hutchinson I don't have to tell myself anything. This is happening worldwide with Centre left parties. The Dems aren't special, they're just the most dangerous because when America fucks up and falls for the GOP, the rest of the world pays for it.

@Kron_Kalle @hutchinson Americans aren't moved by anything like that, don't hold your breath. The rest of the world exists entirely for their convenience. Even their closest neighbour and ally doesn't avoid their contempt, so Europe, Africa, Middle East? No shot.

I don’t understand why I constantly see so many people insisting that Trump has not been constrained by the system. He ordered DOJ to go after Obama. Failed. Comey. Failed. Leticia James. Failed. Bill and Hillary. Failed. “Seditious Six.” Failed. Jerome Powell. Failed.
Bête Noire@iamnotafriend

@hutchinson Hutch, I don't remember who said this, but they were quite accurate... you rely on your NPC dialog tree. Stop it, pls Obstacles have not stopped Trump from trying to, and successfully couping the government. Yes, it was a coup when he gave Elon Musk access to our infrastructure.

@hutchinson @Ampersannd No. And we should be honest about it. It's fucked. If you want to protect against those extreme swings, the filibuster is needed. Stop dangling reform from a stick knowing that it requires an unreachable majority, or nuking the filibuster, which turns any reform into a bandaid.

@OneTwoManyFew @Ampersannd Do you have an alternate solution to the problem of democrats needing 60 votes for most of the stuff they want to do vs republicans being able to hit most of their goals with reconciliation and executive authority?

Let’s say President Newsom goes scorched earth. Bends & breaks the rules. Trump & his admin go to prison. He spends all his capital doing this, the public disapproves of it, and doesn’t pass reforms. Dems lose in 2030 and 2032. GOP trifecta. Trump and his cabinet are pardoned.

@hutchinson @Ampersannd This admin will be pardoned by Trump. They will all get off scott-free, and there is nothing anyone at the federal level can do about it. As for reforms, what would Project 2025 have been without the filibuster? You don't think they do that when they get back in?

If you’re not proposing ways to block republicans from power, then I don’t really know what is being debated here. The way political parties build trust with voters is by governing competently and delivering good policies that resonate with voters. But if the voters decide they want to elect a criminal that corruptly enriched themselves, they get to do that. Forcing a Nuremberg 2.0 situation that is outside of the boundaries of law and the constitution is not going to prevent that from happening in the future. Reforms can and do help in a way that is lasting and meaningful. So democrats should probably do those things. And as far as the filibuster goes, I do not see it as an inherently liberal norm. Quite the opposite tbh. It blocks things that have broad support from the public, so I think it should go.

@hutchinson @Ampersannd It sounds like you're just making shit up about my position. I'm working off the basis they will hold power again, and any decisions made now will affect us the next time they do. What happened to harm reduction? We don't reduce harm by removing guardrails to authoritarianism.

@OneTwoManyFew @Ampersannd It sounds like you’re trying to devise a solution to simply block republicans from holding office. You do that by winning elections in a democracy. Otherwise it’s not democracy.

@hutchinson @Ampersannd What will the fascists do without a filibuster when they have control? How does liberalism hold up without that protection? Slim to no chance of accountability, and a free run at power without the filibuster? Why not just set up an Enabling Act for Vance?

@OneTwoManyFew @Ampersannd 1. Obama just came out and said they should do it. Lots are on board. Don’t know if it’s likely, but it is for sure possible. 2. Reforms should be short and long term goals. If you can’t get them done with the next Congress, you stay engaged and keep pushing.
