You’ll never forget your first. The tangible memento which reminds you daily that your art is appreciated, that your effort was worth the energy, that this is only the beginning, that it’s always best to march by the beat of your own drum because you don’t know any other way.

Joe Dante's Small Soldiers (1998) is criminally overlooked. It’s Toy Story’s unhinged sibling: the toys don’t play, they declare war. Brilliant Stan Winston effects, great cast, Tommy Lee Jones and Frank Langella voice work, biting satire and an edgy kids’ thriller. Magical stuff

Steven Spielberg explains why he didn't like 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' (1984) & why he felt he was fated to make the movie: “I wasn’t happy with 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' (1984) at all. It was too dark, too subterranean, & much too horrific. I thought it out-poltered 'Poltergeist' (1982). There’s not an ounce of my own personal feeling in 'Temple of Doom'. I look back and I say, ‘Well, the greatest thing that I got out of that movie was I met Kate Capshaw. We were married years later that to me was the reason I was fated to make 'Temple of Doom'.” ("Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: An Oral History", Paul Bullock, Medium, 2017)

I saw this movie when it first premiered and loved it. I watched it again recently and was shocked by how well it holds up. It works because they turned a film with an absurd premise (mutant sewer-dwelling turtle-ninjas, mentored by a rat) into a timeless story about the importance of family: Master Splinter (the rat) is the Sage archetype, and a father figure for the adolescent turtles, and @Heyjude629 smartly plays April O'Neil as a tough, stabilizing maternal force. Shredder, the villain, is the Dark Father. The film reveals early on that his Foot Clan is, like many gangs, comprised entirely of wayward teenage boys. The story resolves only after the titular heroes learn to unite under the leadership of their father. Only then can the Shredder be defeated (and his young male followers shown a better way). Because the animatronics and puppetry are so exquisite, suspension of disbelief is much easier than it would be with expensive but alienating CGI. The film feels more "real" because all this work was done by humans, not by computers. The reason there's so much nostalgia for decades past--and why so much media from the past enjoys popularity today--is that no matter how young you are you feel the emptiness of modern society, and part of that emptiness you feel is the result of a mechanized pop culture created by cynical people who are ideologically hostile to everything that makes life worth living.

It’s crazy that a 36 year old movie still looks better than almost anything that releases today

@KevOnStage Some of you in these comments are stupidly hilarious, this show is gonna be massive and it’s gonna show the gap between reality and Twitter. Its success might just pull you out this matrix.

If I were gonna make a movie from Tolkien leftovers I'd probably choose a sidequel like "Here's how humans and dwarves teamed up to hold off Sauron's northern forces at the Lonely Mountain while the story you know was going on to the south." There are juicier stories to tell.

@robinsonishyde As someone who has produced 7 features, I don’t possibly know how he’d only get paid $5K on a $1.5M budget unless that was his choice? Not that he’d be getting rich on that budget, but $5K is what you make on like, a $100K budget.

On @walterkirn's advice I'm reading President Grant's memoirs and...they're some of the best writing I've ever read. I'm at the end of the Mexican-American War (which he regarded as an unjust land grab) & he's describing his disgust at the cruelty of a bullfight. A good dude.

My favorite Trojan War-themed fiction is the hard-to-find but excellent The Shattered Horse, S.P. Somtow's imaginative sequel to The Iliad that brings in everything from the Late Bronze Age collapse to the Bicameral Mind hypothesis. Look at that praise from the great Gene Wolfe!

One way I think Frieren could have done something more interesting with its premise was if Himmel was a more flawed/grey character and the idealized picture of him we see in Frieren's memories was a distortion showing how the passage of time leaves only the most positive memories
