@NathanGDQuest Even when there is a private "foundation" in your field of work, they do tend to coddle, platform, and placate commercially-minded efforts. Altruism is a significant challenge for many. The tendency to adopt zero sum thinking is very hard to resist without education & practice.

A sad reality of Free Software is that the most well-funded companies that greatly benefit from the technologies will actually rarely contribute or give back, even when they request changes. For a project like Godot, the vast majority of the funding and contributions ultimately come from indie game developers, Free Software organizations or enthusiasts, and companies built by long time contributors to the project. You can scour big industry events actively trying to get sponsorships. Even if there are companies with really large revenue using Godot that have much to gain from this, it just doesn't work like that. And Godot is lucky to be really up there among the Free Software projects that receive some funding or sponsored developer time from multinationals - generally to better support their own platforms or products, e.g. integrating C# for Microsoft, improving mobile rendering performance for Google...

Arguably the most brilliant engineer in FFmpeg left because of this. He reverse engineered dozens of codecs by hand as a volunteer. Then security "researchers" and corporate employees came along repeatedly insisted "critical" security issues were fixed immediately waving their CVEs. This was hugely demotivating to the fun and enjoyment of reverse engineering.

An interesting article in the Nov 2025 issue of "IEEE Microwave Magazine" walks through the design of a portable 2.4 GHz CW radar built entirely from COTS parts and an Arduino Nano. Simple and educational; great for students and hobbyists.

The rest of 2025 is documenting lessons learned from QO-100, and making sure that the @esa has input from stakeholders. 2026 is demonstrating prototypes. Linear transponders to advanced digital regenerative payloads are under consideration.

We had two volunteer participants and our message about open source digital radio and modern amateur-focused solutions came through loud and clear. There's a clear plan forward from here.

The ##FutureGEO workshop for #AmateurRadio in Space happened in Bochum, Germany on 19 September 2025. This workshop was held immediately before the @amsatdl symposium. This was an important step forward for the amateur radio satellite service.
