Man, Valko's never beating the Sylus rip-off allegations, is he? Luckily, I'm stubborn enough to keep rooting for him. I'll concede that they seem to be re-using the predator/prey dynamic, the scent kink, and the enemies to lovers trope. But as I like to keep saying, that doesn't inherently make him a one-to-one copy of Sylus. In fact, despite many claiming that he's also a copy of Caleb, I think it's more accurate to say that he's a foil to Rafayel. Let's break down this trailer and see what it says about Valko when compared to Sylus and Rafayel. Sylus' dynamic with MC emphasizes how, despite Sylus seeing her as an equal, he's generally still one step ahead of her in some way. Valko seems to be more in-league with MC, getting caught off-guard and even overpowered by her. Sylus evidently has a scent kink since he mentions how good MC smells fairly often. However, in Valko's case, it seems to be less of a kink and more of a natural instinct. MC's scent isn't just sexy to Valko, it's straight-up enthralling, like a cat's reaction to silvervine. It makes him want to do whatever she asks of him (more on this later). Sylus started off as MC's enemy because she assumed he had something to do with her grandmother's death. Here, it looks like Valko and MC became enemies because they were both hunting for the same thing. MC ends up working together with Sylus and Valko, but the alliance with Sylus was his idea and was forced upon her (at first). The alliance with Valko seems to be MC's idea and she just convinces him instead of forcing him. Finally, Sylus is a crime boss who only gave MC permission to enter and leave the N109 Zone as she pleases after she took the brooch from him. Valko is a CEO who seems to give MC a ring indicating their association with each other as a gesture of good will. Then there's the LIs themselves. Sylus is more calm, methodical, and commands Onychinus to assist in his missions, while Valko seems more feral, spontaneous, and mostly works alone. In other words, Sylus is the action villain. Valko is the action hero. But enough about the demon. Let's talk about the fishie. Rafayel and Valko have a similar cadence in their voices. It's a sort of "casual" sound implying a laid-back nature, except Raf's kinda sounds like he doesn't care and Valko's kinda sounds like he's overconfident. Raf and Valko both belong to a faction of mythical creatures. Raf is a mermaid and Valko is a werewolf. Raf takes MC into the ocean to teach her how a Lemurian sees the ocean and its creatures. It looks like Valko takes MC into the forest to teach her how a wolf hunts its prey and cares for its kin. Finally, Raf is connected to MC by a bond mark and it allows her to command him…sometimes. Valko seems to imprint on MC as soon as he smells her pheromones, and it triggers an instinct to do whatever she tells him. My final verdict? Valko is only superficially comparable to Sylus, and we finally have the Rafayel foil we've been missing all this time. Where's Valko on my list of LIs? So far, second to Sylus. Sorry, Xavier. You're bronze now. XD
