I'd say the $133,000 threshold used in one of the studies is too low. To really be upper middle class, part of the mass affluent, you need to be in roughly the top 10% of income, or $200-250,000+

It's funny, Houston is this supernova of growth, the rare place in the US that is absorbing millions of domestic and international migrants and making them richer, but if you say anything nice about it, e.g. maybe non-zoning is fine, people have a meltdown.

I think NYC really suffers from being the only Real City in a country of 300 million people. Manhattan has become a sort of City Disney Land for kids from Florida and Ohio. There is no other place to fulfill the fantasy.

The Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) tests volunteer samples of adults aged 16-65.
After removing immigrants and scaling everyone relative to native Britons, the U.S. Black-White gap was ~20 points (~1.17 g).

Fascinating map.
Chicago used to be a city of lower-middle income Irish, Italian, Black, Slavic, etc neighborhoods.
Following white flight, ADOS Black flight, and the last two Mayor's, it is now a Manhattan-level core of millionaires surrounded by hood and hipster slums.
This, btw, is how you get "400" shooters - mostly minorities, sure - in one area of the city, and "two" in another.
