Fact check: There was no citizenship test at all in the SIR. Nobody was removed for being "Bangladeshi".
According to EC, people were removed ostensibly due to things like spelling errors. In fact, the actual algorithm used by the EC has never been made public. We've already had many instances of it being proved that people deleted were Indians.

To stand just two feet away and point a finger while questioning the country’s Prime Minister or Finance Minister, a journalist needs immense courage.
But even more than that, it requires the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister to have deep faith in democracy.
A journalist can show such courage only when they know that the nation’s leadership has unshakable trust in democratic values and institutions.
This faith in democracy was deeply embodied by Manmohan Singh. There is a quiet story often recalled by those who worked closely with him: even at the peak of his power, he would patiently listen to the harshest criticism, rarely interrupting, often taking notes himself. Once, after a particularly aggressive press interaction, an aide asked him why he never responded sharply. He calmly replied, “Democracy is strengthened when power listens more than it speaks.”
Serving the nation five years as Finance Minister and ten years as Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh led with humility, intellect, and restraint. He proved that authority does not need loudness, and strength does not need arrogance. His life remains a gentle reminder that true leadership is rooted in trust—trust in institutions, trust in dialogue, and trust in democracy itself.

To my mind, this Bengal election is a litmus test of whether we have fallen below the minimum threshold of electoral integrity, whether electoral democracy has any future at all. I cannot get into numbers, but all the credible information that I have been able to gather so far points to a comfortable lead for the TMC, more than enough to make up for the SIR damage. If despite this the ECI manages to conjure a victory for BJP, this has to be the result of an electoral fraud. Such an (unlikely, despite what exit polls say) event must get the entire opposition to come together and ask if there is any point of contesting any more elections under these circumstances. — Yogendra Yadav

I usually avoid responding to singular tweets, but this one from the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs cannot be ignored. It is the right of every opposition party, in fact every citizen to question all the arms of government. Calling it an attack on democracy is against the very grain of democracy. This idea propagated by the present government that the entire opposition is a negative force is the real threat to democracy.

Was Indian democracy thriving when emergency was imposed in 1975, did democracy dance when the Chief Justice of India was appointed, superseding 3 senior most Judges by the Congress govt in 1973? SC termed CBI caged carrot, a Chief Election Commissioner was appointed as Union Minister, Congress MP, Baharul Islam was made High Court Judge, all top Constitution Authorities and Head of Agencies used to be directly appointed by the Congress Govts, unlike through a Committee now. Where were those fake and pseudo secularists when the Preamble of the Constitution of India as gifted by Dr. BR Ambedkar and the founding members was changed by Congress Govt? The sins committed by the Congress Party never ends.... People of India are not fools!
