Self inherited a team from Kruger that was #8 preseason before he ever coached a single game. He took that team to a one-seed but they were upset by Arizona in the Elite Eight. #8 preseason, Elite Eight, that was fine. We were then ranked #3 preseason in 2002 and a national title was the goal. We climbed as high as #2 but then stumbled through the rest of season and fell to a 4-seed, losing to Kansas in the Sweet 16. The "Self can't win in the Tournament" noise began. The next year was the worst Tournament loss, a Round-of-32 exit to 5-seed Notre Dame. After that loss, on a fledgling message board called IlliniBoard, the Self noise was overwhelming. "This is a coach who can challenge for and win conference titles but he will never win in the Tournament", everyone screamed. It was wrong then -- Self was, indeed, an amazing coach and I wish he would have stayed forever -- and it's wrong now. It is a critical eye taken too far. An emotional hedge dressed up as a "standard" to be met.
