It is deeply unfortunate that Shamso Dahir Gure and Farhiyo Dahir Shine, Somali mothers and community activists, are spending their fifth night in detention after peacefully opposing land grabbing in Mogadishu. Their detention for expressing their views is a clear violation of their constitutional right to free speech. This arrest reflects intimidation and the continued attempt to silence the public and narrow civic space. I call on the government to immediately and unconditionally release Shamso and Farhiyo, to end the jailing of women for exercising their rights, and to take urgent action to address land grabbing and the displacement of vulnerable communities.

Currently Somalis speak Somali, Arabic, and English, Mr Minister If integration into the East African Community is the aim, English already serves that purpose; national funds could address more pressing domestic priorities.
