Really enjoyed the amazing @H4bibRahman's first speach as Lord Mayor of Newcastle @NewcastleCC. Our first BAME and Muslim Lord Mayor, our first citizen. He dedicated his year to Respect, Tolerence & Equality. His speach was alternately personal, political, moving and funny.

And to everyone who worked so hard building our successful campaign - thank you too. I will work hard, stand up for the area, and to be true to Labour’s mission for a fairer, greener city.

It's the messy morning after the night before on the City Stadium today. I expect that is going to be a lot of cleaning up to do over the next few weeks. I've reported it directly to senior staff at the council.

Absolutely delighted that @NewcastleCC planning committee rejected the plot 12 planning application today. Really proud to have worked with the residents at St Annes’s Quay who ran an exemplary campaign. The committee did the right thing.

14.4million people in the UK were living in poverty in 2018/19, 4.5 million of them children, and 4.5m in deep poverty. The numbers must be much worse now. What hope can there be that Johnson & Co will effectively address this terrible situation faced by 20% of our population?

The public spaces of Ouseburn are for us all - they are not impromptu latrines or drinking clubs. It is getting hotter & unofficial parties are getting too big. I've asked the Poice & Crime Cssnr & Council leaders to help - we need to calm it down & dial up the mutual respect.

This looks like a really good decision. UC rules mean people on a low income loose benefit some months even if their montly pay is always the same. It is because of the way UC set it's "assessment periods" dates. Good that the courts have found this irrational & wrong.
