The FTC has reached a proposed settlement with CVS Caremark over allegations that its PBM business practices artificially inflated insulin prices and limited patient access to lifesaving medication. Patients rationed their dosages and, in some cases, died after a lack of sufficient treatment. One patient, $24,699 in total drug costs. But because of Medicare’s out-of-pocket cap, this patient paid $2,100 for the entire year instead of tens of thousands of dollars for his medications. Without this critical reform, patients would still be exposed to devastating costs at the pharmacy counter.
