When Gauri Maulekhi’s beloved dog died due to a lack of veterinary care, it opened her eyes to a deeper crisis—one where countless animals suffer in silence. She could have turned away, but instead, she turned her grief into action. Her work has since impacted over 50 lakh animals, especially the overworked horses, donkeys, and mules along pilgrimage routes like Chardham and Vaishno Devi. She didn’t just raise her voice—she created change. Gauri trained over 50,000 volunteers, sensitised 5,000 officials, and helped establish Uttarakhand’s only equine sanctuary. One moment that haunts her still is when she saw two collapsed horses being tormented with fire to force them to stand. That pain became her purpose. Through petitions, policy reforms, and persistent advocacy, she’s ensured that only healthy, registered animals are used on these treks, and that complaint systems are now in place. Her AHIMSA Fellowship builds future changemakers because, as she says, “There are far too few animals I can personally assist—that’s why we built a structure to empower others.” For Gauri, animal welfare isn’t just about rescue—it’s about reimagining a more compassionate, accountable world. #AnimalWelfare #GauriMaulekhi #AhimsaFellowship #CompassionInAction #EquineRescue #PilgrimageRoutes #IndiaForAnimals #SystemicChange #EmpathyInAction
