In South Africa you almost hope that the crook in charge is not removed because the next crook in line is an even bigger crook.

The Phala Phala judgment is not really a judgment on President Cyril Ramaphosa himself, it is a judgment on parliamentary procedure and accountability. My view is that ordinarily, if this had happened during the first term of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s presidency, he would probably have resigned and not wait to be impeached. But because of the nature of South African politics today, particularly the so-called Government of National Unity, which is in reality a coalition government involving multiple parties led by the ANC, I do not think those seeking to impeach him have the numbers. You need the Democratic Alliance to successfully impeach President Cyril Ramaphosa. But the DA would not want Ramaphosa to be removed because his impeachment could collapse the GNU altogether. The likely alternative would be Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who is politically to the left of Ramaphosa and would probably be more open to a coalition arrangement with the EFF and MK, something both big business and the DA clearly do not want. So I think this is ultimately an academic judgment that is unlikely to result in Cyril Ramaphosa being successfully impeached. The only real possibility is if he decides to leave of his own accord rather than face a prolonged political battle, but I doubt that too. I suspect that big business in South Africa is already making calls behind the scenes urging him to stay put. I also think the DA will quietly be doing the same thing, reassuring him that they are unlikely to support any impeachment process whilst sabre-rattling publicly. In response to the judgment, the Democratic Alliance said that it would not support any wrongdoing, but ultimately politics is about survival, and it is very opportunistic. My view is that the DA would look at the bigger picture and not specifically at Cyril Ramaphosa’s issues, but at the bigger picture, because his removal would immediately, in my view, collapse the GNU. And the DA would be under so much pressure, not just from its supporters but from its financiers who sponsor it, to put the bigger picture ahead of a narrow political victory by removing Cyril Ramaphosa. I have seen other comments saying that the DA would be worried about the local government elections and that this might push it towards supporting Ramaphosa’s impeachment. But the biggest threat to the DA in Cape Town is not the ANC. It is probably the PA. And the PA leader, Gayton McKenzie, publicly stated a week or two ago that he would support Cyril Ramaphosa all the way until the end of his term in 2029. What I actually see happening now is probably the DA, the PA and others whose numbers could become significant in any impeachment motion trying to extract concessions on other unrelated political issues. That is how coalition politics often works. Moments of political vulnerability are frequently used by smaller or strategic parties to negotiate influence, policy concessions or political guarantees behind the scenes. That tweet from veteran South African journalist Clement Manyathela in 2024 is quite instructive. But, as they say, time will tell.

How to Invest in Property for the Price of a Coffee ☕ Property investment often feels like a gated community. The traditional view is that you need millions of Rand or a massive bank loan to participate. This perception keeps many potential investors on the sidelines. However, the South African market offers several vehicles that allow you to own high-quality assets without a 2 million Rand deposit. The most accessible entry point is through Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). Think of them as the “Uber of property ownership” - you don’t need to own the car to benefit from the ride. Growthpoint is a prime example of this structure. A REIT is more than just a listed company; it is a specific legal entity designed to pass income to its shareholders. These funds are required by regulation to distribute at least 75% of their taxable earnings to shareholders annually as dividends. In practice, many distribute closer to 80–90%. This structure also ensures that investors receive a consistent income stream while the fund itself avoids corporate tax on those distributions. Read the full article to see how you can start investing in property for the price of your daily coffee.

A 31-year-old primary school teacher with a doctorate was turned down for a senior position at the Western Cape Department of Education. Devastated but determined, he resigned, took his R240,000 severance package, and on a wet winter morning in July 1998, opened a small school in the vestry of a church in Durbanville. He had 28 learners and three friends helping him. That modest beginning became Curro — today South Africa’s largest private school network, with 189 schools and over 72,000 learners. It grew into a JSE-listed company valued at R7.2 billion. But the real story goes far beyond the numbers. Years later, Dr Chris van der Merwe reflected: “I can tell you without doubt that I never started Curro with the intention of making money. I wanted to serve the country by creating affordable private education.” He proved those words were genuine. In 2025, he played a central role in one of the most remarkable moves in South African education history: the Jannie Mouton Foundation acquired Curro for R7.2 billion, took the company private, and converted it into a public benefit organisation. The decision was supported by a 99.98% shareholder vote. Going forward, 100% of Curro’s surpluses will be reinvested into building more schools, providing bursaries, and expanding access for underprivileged learners. Not driven by profit, but by purpose. I think about this story often when working with families who are building wealth. Creating financial success is important, but the families that leave the most meaningful legacies are those who build for something greater than themselves — not merely to accumulate. What felt like a painful rejection in 1997 turned out to be the very door that led to everything that mattered. Sometimes the door that closes is the one that changes the entire direction of your life — for the better. Can you imagine that such an amazing man is not wanted by his country, simply because he is white?

It is disheartening to witness the systematic lowering of standards in South Africa. For a nation that was once in the same developmental conversation as Europe, benchmarking its success against Malawi or Zimbabwe is no victory. No other SADC nation is falling, or has ever fallen, from the heights South Africa once occupied, it stood head and shoulders above the rest. It is a tragedy to watch the bar drop from the heights of space exploration and nuclear programs to the mediocrity of merely being "better than our neighbors." With five cities ranked in the global top ten for crime and infrastructure in freefall, the pride taken in attracting foreign nationals only masks the reality of porous borders and a total collapse of immigration governance. In a country with free elections and no dictatorship, South Africans have no one to blame but themselves for the leaders they choose to retain. The standard hasn't just slipped, it has officially dropped. — Media curated by @jozivsjozi

During talks between U.S. and Iranian delegations in Pakistan, the topic of Ukraine unexpectedly came up. While discussing U.S. guarantees in the event that Iran halts uranium enrichment and abandons the development of nuclear weapons, the Iranian side asked how the United States is fulfilling the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, in which it pledged to respect and protect Ukraine’s sovereignty. The U.S. delegation left the question unanswered.

As Africans, we get easily divided over simple facts because we want to cling to the idea that our problems are too complicated. The truth is that we are pinned to a narrative sold by politicians who need to be Saviors just to win the next election. They keep us stuck on race-baiting talking points that should have died decades ago. Imagine still saying a white person cannot be African in the same era where we have seen a Black man in the Oval Office and a man of Indian descent leading the UK. That argument is not revolutionary, It's intellectual bankruptcy. We are feeding off a political toxicity and savagery that we should be embarrassed to repeat. While the rest of the world is debating who owns the water on the Moon, we are debating who owns a farm based on their grandfather's skin colour. In 2026, being divided over skin colour is straight-up barbaric and embarrassing. It is a distraction for people who cannot build systems. True maturity is realizing that the flag is wide enough for every race, but the future is too narrow for incompetence.

The story of white African farmers has remained a consistent reality over the years. They produce millions of tonnes of grain, massive quantities of meat and fruit, and large volumes of milk. However, botched land reforms, often racially charged and framed as justice, have resulted in farm seizures that leave behind dysfunctional land. These farms often lack the ability to replicate the results achieved by professional farmers. Ultimately, Africa bears the loss through decreased farm employment, food shortages, and a lack of economic support from what was once a highly productive sector. It is baffling and truly astounding how some people insist on doubling down on a strategy that has repeatedly failed, yielding nothing but economic ruin and proving to be completely counterproductive.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi has just handed the Gauteng Treasury to the EFF – not to fix the province, but to save his own position as ANC Gauteng chairperson! 😡 He has reshuffled his cabinet and appointed EFF leader Nkululeko Dunga as MEC for Finance, while moving Lebogang Maile to Education. This desperate move is about buying EFF support ahead of local government elections and protecting himself against internal ANC battles – not about delivering services to residents. Solly Msimanga MPL: “This decision will not benefit the people of Gauteng. Lesufi is giving in to EFF threats instead of fixing failing municipalities and basic services.” The DA will closely monitor every rand spent under the new MEC for Finance. We demand value for money and will not allow the public purse to be looted. Gauteng residents deserve a government that puts them first – not one trading portfolios for political survival. #DAatWork #RescueSA #DA_GPL #FixGauteng #VoteDA #LesufiReshuffle #GautengTreasury Read more: open.substack.com/pub/dagpl/p/le…
