Happy birthday to former Tecumseh, North Texas and NFL running back and current Oklahoma State running backs coach and run game coordinator Patrick Cobbs, born on this day in 1983 in Shawnee. Cobbs was an Oklahoma Coaches Association and Oklahoman All-State selection at defensive back as a senior after making 84 tackles and four interceptions. He was also named Little All-City Offensive Player of the Year by The Oklahoman after running for 2,354 yards and 36 touchdowns. In his high school career, he totaled 4,729 yards and 61 touchdowns and made 313 tackles and intercepted 18 passes on defense. He also participated in track and field at Tecumseh. He signed with North Texas, where he played in all 11 games for the Mean Green as a freshman, running for 399 yards and three touchdowns. His breakout season came in 2003 when he carried the ball 307 times for 1,680 yards and 19 touchdowns. His 152.7 yards per game led the nation that year. Injuries derailed his senior season and he earned a medical redshirt in 2004. When he returned, he rushed for 1,154 yards and six touchdowns, earning the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year award. When he completed his career at North Texas, he was the Mean Green all-time leader in rushing yards (4,050). Cobbs went undrafted in 2006, but was signed by the New England Patriots. He was later traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers and later signed on the practice squad of the Miami Dolphins. He saw limited playing time, but when he did play, he made the most of his opportunities. In a game against the Houston Texans in 2008, he caught three passes for 138 yards, taking two of those catches for touchdowns of 58 and 80 yards. A knee injury in 2009 cost him the majority of the season and in 2011, he signed with the New Orleans Saints, but was placed on injured reserve after the final preseason game. In his NFL career, he played in 54 games, rushing for 171 yards and two touchdowns with a 4.6 yards per carry average. He also had 32 catches for 409 yards and four touchdowns. In 2010, Cobbs was inducted into the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame. He began coaching at Denton Ryan (TX), coaching running backs from 2014 to 2018. In 2015, the Raiders advanced to the state semifinals and finished with a record of 13-1. It was the first of four consecutive semifinals appearances for Ryan. In 2019, Cobbs was named running backs coach at his alma mater, North Texas. He also served as assistant head coach in 2022 and in 2024, the run game coordinator was added to his responsibilities. In 2025, Cobbs earned the FootballScoop Running Backs Coach of the Year after helping former North Rock Creek star Caleb Hawkins have one of the most prolific true freshman seasons in college football history, scoring a true-freshman NCAA record 29 touchdowns and running for 1,434 yards. In December 2025, Cobbs joined former North Texas head coach Eric Morris at Oklahoma State. A few weeks later, Hawkins joined Cobbs with the Cowboys and the duo are one of the reasons OSU fans are very optimistic about the 2026 season. Happy birthday Patrick! #tdfn #okpreps @PCobbs43 @recruittecumseh @MeanGreenFB @CowboyFB @RyanRaiderFB
