The Trump administration is moving to roll back limits on some PFAS, the toxic “forever chemicals” found in the drinking water of millions of Americans. The Biden-era rule set the first national drinking-water limits for several PFAS compounds. But industry groups argued the standards were legally flawed and too costly to meet. @WmBrangham has more.

The Trump administration is moving to roll back limits on some PFAS, the toxic "forever chemicals" found in the drinking water for millions of Americans. The Biden-era rule set the first national drinking water limits for several PFAS compounds, but industry groups argued the standards were legally flawed and too costly to meet. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin says the chemicals still need to be addressed, but that the previous administration overreached. William Brangham (@WmBrangham) joins Geoff Bennett (@GeoffRBennett) with more.

Breaking news: The EPA proposed repealing limits on four types of “forever chemicals” in drinking water. The proposal would end the Biden-era restrictions on four PFAS compounds and give utilities more time to comply with limits on two others. wapo.st/3PAD2lM

Sewage sludge, containing PFAS, is being spread on farmlands across America as fertilizer, and it's now appearing in the plants that farmers harvest and the meat and milk of the livestock they raise. wjla.com/features/i-tea…

The recent U.S. FDA characterization of baby formula as “safe” is entirely misleading. In the FDA dataset, about two-thirds of the infant formulas tested had detectable PFAS. The highest levels were found in soy-based formula samples, especially powder soy-based formulas. These detections were mainly driven by PFBA, with some soy powder samples containing around 30-34 ppt. @bennettpeer @Nathan_Donley theguardian.com/us-news/2026/m…

New Study: Toxic PFAS ‘Forever Chemicals’ Found in All Produce Samples Tested From Long Island Farms. The study tested 23 samples of carrots, romaine lettuce, Boston lettuce and beets purchased in summer 2025 from eight farms on the North and South forks. Two of the farms were organic and six conventional. Researchers said all samples contained detectable levels of PFAS. Stephen Lasee, an environmental toxicologist with Lasee Research & Consulting, said PFAS can get into vegetables through multiple pathways, including contaminated soil, irrigation water, air deposition, fertilizers, pesticides and biosolids. He said the study did not determine which of those pathways may be responsible for the contamination found in the Long Island samples. Certified organic farmers are prohibited from using synthetic pesticides, which are sometimes made with PFAS chemicals, and prohibited from using biosolids (also known as sewage sludge) which are more often than not contaminated with PFAS chemicals. But we've seen many organic farms test positive for PFAS-contaminated soil because the previous farm owners farmed conventionally, using biosolids as a cheap form of fertilizer. PFAS chemicals, once in the environment, are nearly indestructible, which is why they're called 'forever chemicals.' What is in the environment will eventually make it into the food we eat. PFAS contaminated soil and water is a national problem and extends far beyond Long Island to every state. The only real solution is federal rulemaking to stop the pollution at its source, and then making polluters pay for cleanup. We fought long and hard for meaningful change and the previous EPA had new rules in place to begin dealing with the problems. Unfortunately, the current EPA rolled back all of those regulations to benefit corporate polluters. Back to square one.
