Happy Birthday to Thomas McKean, signer of the Declaration of Independence, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania and second Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania! Born March 19, 1734 on a farm in Chester County, McKean, active in the politics of Delaware, encouraged Caesar Rodney to cast the deciding vote for American independence. #America250PA, #PA250 @PHMC dedicated a historical marker to McKean on Oct. 26, 1974 at 1895 New London Road, Franklin Township.

The oldest abolitionist organization in the nation traces it roots to Anthony Benezet, an French-born abolitionist and #Philadelphia teacher. Benezet helped start the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage, which continues to exist today as the Pennsylvania Abolition Society. As the Society prepares to recognize its Semiquincentennial, how has it endured for a quarter of a millennium, even after the United States ended slavery more than 160 years ago? ➡️ bit.ly/4lBN1Tq As America approaches its 250th birthday, PHMC is sharing articles from "Pennsylvania Heritage" magazine that lay out the monumental part Pennsylvania played in the founding of our nation. #America250PA, #PA250

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day ☘️ from @PHMC ! Landis Valley Museum preserves this “Erin Go Bragh” tobacco flannel. “Erin Go Bragh” is an Irish-language phrase often used to express allegiance to Ireland. Tobacco flannels (also knowns as silks and felts) came in a variety of sizes & themes. They were collected by both smokers and non-smokers and used in sewing projects. #stpatricksday ➡️bit.ly/3OZKO8r

Phebe Earle Gibbons is not usually a name dropped when speaking about well-known Pennsylvania women. However, a person need not be a celebrity to make their mark on history. A Philadelphia native, Gibbons was raised in a Quaker family who supported the causes of the time, including abolition of slavery, temperance, woman's suffrage and free public schools. A diarist, Gibbons wrote about daily farm life and about her Amish and Mennonite neighbors. Much of her writing for “Pennsylvania Dutch,” preserved by Historic Ephrata Cloister, was first published in magazines and newspapers. Gibbons visited the Ephrata Cloister in 1872 and 1882 and writes about the historic site in a lengthy chapter. #PaTreasures, #WomensHistoryMonth - bit.ly/40mDAh2

Happy #NationalJohnnyAppleseedDay! Born Sept. 26, 1774, Johnny Appleseed - real name John Chapman - was the legendary character who spread apple seeds & planted orchards that supplied apples mainly for making hard cider and alcoholic apple jack. Chapman helped nourish a fledgling frontier — a frontier that, at the time, went through Pennsylvania.➡️ bit.ly/4umC0cG

We couldn't let #PackYourLunchDay slip by without spotlighting this circa-1890 tin lunch bucket. Preserved by Eckley Miners' Village, this dinner pail was frequently used by Pennsylvania's anthracite miners. The top part is a thermos and the lid was used as a cup. Ham sandwiches, potatoes and onions were often made the daily menu. ➡️bit.ly/4bjCjfI

Pennsylvania has no shortage of champions from the women’s suffrage and temperance movements. From the 1880s until her death in 1919, Anna Howard Shaw campaigned across America at the grassroots level for these causes and was noted for her compelling lectures. Shaw became a resident of Pennsylvania in 1908 when she purchased a property in Moylan, Delaware County. She continued her activities at this home until 1919, when she died there of pneumonia just prior to the passing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that gave voting rights to women. ➡️ paheritage.wpengine.com/article/anna-h… #WomenHistoryMonth

Perhaps one of the most enduring legends of the American Revolution is that of a woman who witnessed the death of her husband as he was manning a cannon in the heat of battle. Desperate to secure a victory, this woman takes his place, continuing to fire the cannon and inspiring the men around. The story of Molly Pitcher’s daring actions amid a raging battle, undeterred by grief at the shocking loss of her husband, is both romantic and patriotic. - bit.ly/4ujhOs6 #internationalwomensday, #America250PA, #PA250
