Head of Divison @swac_oecd. I tweet on Africa, people, urbanisation, food systems and random dataviz. All tweets are personal opinion (and taste).

Cairo 🇪🇬 Lagos 🇳🇬 Johannesburg 🇿🇦 Kinshasa 🇨🇩 These names easily come to mind as the largest urban agglomerations in #Africa. But did you know that Onitsha 🇳🇬 is the 3⃣rd largest urban area in Africa? Check out ➡️🖱️ Africapolis.org for more on #urbanisation in Africa!

@PHeinrigs Thresholds are the definition i.e. if an urban settlement is defined as being one with more than 5k people, then 5k is the threshold. Agreed that Africapolis sometimes below, sometimes above. But Kenya 2015 urban figure is plain ridiculous. 65% urban?!

@johnpmcdermott OK. Africapolis gives 28m as urban pop of Africa in 1950 and Kenya urban pop 2015 29m. But Africapolis urban thresholds way lower than any other body. Hence controversy/debate. WB, UN etc put c30% of 48m pop as urban. 2019 census has 15m urban.

There's been lots of great stuff written about African megacities such as Lagos and Kinshasa But they miss something: the rise of small-town Africa My piece this week is about how the growth of second cities and towns is transforming the continent economist.com/middle-east-an…
