Education is a public provision of moral society—not a private enterprise for personal profit. Children are investments in the Common Good—not commodities on an open market. Private charters violate this truth. #txlege must limit them & bring them under public control. #txed

@lisadawnfisher @starleecoleman @mishshel I bring up UT Elementary bc it’s a good counterexample to the (IMO) overly broad characterization in the original post. It’s also a “demonstration school” - research at UT is applied in a school setting, which sounds a lot like a “pocket of innovation” to borrow Dr Smith’s phrase

@lisadawnfisher @starleecoleman @mishshel Agree with Mrs Coleman. It doesn’t have to be either/or, zero-sum. Charters are here to stay, so let’s talk about reform and accountability. There are A LOT of underperforming charters out there, so perhaps making it harder to get and easier to revoke a charter is a good start?

@mishshel Thank you, I agree with both of those points. I suppose your goal as an advocate for millions is different than mine as an advocate for one. I’m not sure, but it feels like you’re portraying this as zero-sum, and I don’t agree with that. Willing to be corrected on that, though

@mishshel What are the most positive aspects of charters worth preserving? My child attends UT Elementary and, best I can tell, only #3 maybe applies. He’d otherwise attend a school in Del Valle ISD that has been rated D or F as long as he’s been alive.

Self-regulation along with LT mindset, stock market basics prob unnecessary, insurance is a must-know, compound interest is covered by the rest
