Tragically, a Maldivian military diver also lost his life during the rescue from decompression sickness — bringing the total to six souls claimed by the sea. Cave diving at that depth is the extreme edge of the sport — narrow passages, zero visibility, nitrogen narcosis, oxygen toxicity, and the ever-present risk of disorientation. Even the most prepared can be swallowed by the deep. This is one of the deadliest diving incidents in Maldives history.
