@Undue_Risk The Pennsylvania Railroad called their major stations Pennsylvania Station and their network looked like this:

@PeterMoskos The MTA to my understanding did at one point float being okay with connecting the 6 train to the PATH tunnels for the PATH-Lex project after 9/11, but PANYNJ refused to approve it. Since then, the only MTA operations in NJ is a bus from Staten Island to the HBLR in Bayonne.

@PeterMoskos I would be able to understand this logic if WMATA didn't exist, as it is not under FRA rules but it by definition has to operate in multiple states because all but the Red and Green lines (and until recently, the Yellow Line) operate in both Maryland and Virginia.

Port Authority could build new subway lines connecting New Jersey and New York. There is zero chance the MTA ever will because it would then classify the NYC subway as an Interstate Railroad. And federal railroad regulations would effectively shut down the entire system.
Colin@Colin_d_m

Even by NYC standards, the cost of PABT is horrendous. The fix for New Jersey commuters isn't a bigger bus garage it's a subway. Sadly Port Authority and New Jersey would rather light money on fire than let the MTA cross the Hudson.

Random thought I've had is that the Q32 should use the 34th Street Busway when it opens rather than staying on its current route via 32nd Street (Queens-bound) or 37th Street (Penn Station-bound)

@PKMNred200 @atlurbanist No, that's the point. The point, as stated at the top of the thread, is that BRT down the middle is a bad idea. So, where would you put it?

Unfortunately, this is exactly what's being built in Atlanta on Highway 400 with a Bus Rapid Transit platform in the middle of the highway. Indeed: it's an excuse to widen the highway, and the middle of a freeway is not where transit riders need to go.
Jarrett Walker@humantransit

I would be open to this freeway Bus Rapid Transit vision, if it repurposed existing lanes instead of being an excuse to widen. But the stations would be expensive and the middle of a freeway is not where anyone is going. Road design is not the hard part of this.

@jjcroftiv @atlurbanist The point is, in the ideal world, the BRT would not need to exist and the Red Line extension could have been built alongside 400 as it was planned to. The forced transfer at North Springs makes the existing proposal a terrible use case for BRT in the first place.

@jjcroftiv @atlurbanist The Red Line stub ends at North Springs on GA 400. The current BRT project was proposed after the state Senate struck down permission to put a sales tax measure for an extension of the service to Windward Parkway, which is where the BRT is currently slated to end.

@atlanticesque I still think that when designing the Big Dig, the state should have fought harder against the conservation groups that were pushing hard for a park. I read that Fred Salvucci had originally wanted to rebuild the original street grid but faced a lot of pushback from those groups.

I'm a certified Greenway Hater™ for all the same reasons my friend Bernard is. The Big Dig was one big wasted opportunity. And you don't even need to leave Boston for a better idea! 2 miles away there's actual buildings on top of the decked-over turnpike! Y'know, like a city!

Boston already has this and it basically sucks. It sits cold and empty for a whole half of the year, and even in fair weather is among the worst-utilized land in downtown. A swathe of prime land not used for living, working, commerce, transportation or infrastructure.

@RuNoseP Like, even if you don’t like Zohran, there was no way any other candidate was gonna win. Cuomo was a sex pest, everyone in New York hated Adam’s, Sliwa was funny, but running as a Republican in NYC is suicidal. Anyone else wasn’t popular enough to win

@JeremiahDJohns What is this '16 or more tickets' nonsense? Like what, after number 9 it just hasnt become severe enough? This should be a thing after 3. I've been driving for over a decade and never once gotten a speeding ticket, it isnt hard to drive safely. Be draconian with these maniacs.

If someone has MORE THAN A HUNDRED VIOLATIONS, the time has come to permanently take their driver's license and throw them in jail. This is "300 professional criminals do the majority of all shoplifting" but for cars. Don't let insane people kill us with their cars.
Governor Kathy Hochul@GovKathyHochul

If you’re speeding over and over again, it’s not a mistake. You’re making our streets dangerous. I’ve got a plan to crack down on super-speeders and make New York City safer. Let’s get it done.

i can see why cities that didn't have metro rail / rapid transit before (msp, seattle, stl, la) break ground with light rail. but of the cities that did, why do some (chicago, new york) have no grade-separated light rail while others (boston, philly) do?
