This morning, I took an oath of office as the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa sworn in by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo in Cape Town.

The ANC has learned with deep sadness of the passing of Comrade Abdul Kader Moola, a committed patriot, freedom fighter and loyal cadre of our movement. We convey our heartfelt condolences to his children, the Moola family, comrades, friends and all those who were touched by his life and service.

From a personal perspective, I remember him not only as a disciplined member of the African National Congress, but also as a brother and friend whose conduct reflected the finest values of our movement. Comrade Mahlaba and Hlomuka recently visited me at home to discuss with me as to how we can continue to ensure that we remain focused on the task of building a national democratic society among other issues. I will always cherish that moment and many others where we met with him and Mahlase to talk about his movement the African National Congress as to how it must be strengthened to serve the people. At all times Comrade Mahlaba, carried himself with quiet confidence, deep compassion and genuine respect for others. Government is accelerating water access through boreholes, spring protection, rainwater harvesting and rehabilitation of schemes. We are saying that no community is too remote, too small or too poor to be affected by development. We bring hope where there has been doubt, dignity where there has been struggle, and opportunity where there have been obstacles. The completion of the Babanango Community Water Supply Scheme is a milestone in Government’s efforts to extend access to basic services and improve the lives of rural communities. The plan will provide the surrounding communities with sustainable access to potable water, bringing the benefit of a more secure and dignified future to thousands of residents. This project demonstrates the potential of government collaboration with communities and traditional leadership across all spheres. Water is a fundamental human right enshrined in our Constitution. When a community has no access to clean and reliable water, it is denied more than a basic service; it is denied dignity, opportunity and the full enjoyment of its constitutional rights. We cannot fully claim equality or development as long as vulnerable groups, including women, children, and the elderly, endure significant hardships like long journeys for water due to insufficient infrastructure. Annually on 18 July, the world commemorates Nelson Mandela International Day, and this year Government honours Madiba's legacy of service through practical action that brings safe and reliable water closer to communities. Central to the Mandela Day Programme is the symbolic handover of 67 decentralised water supply schemes across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, demonstrating practical, sustainable and fit-for-purpose solutions that improve water security, restore dignity and expand access to water services. The handover forms part of the Department of Water and Sanitation’s National Water Access Acceleration Programme, a key programme forming part of the National Water Action Plan, through which Government is accelerating access to safe and reliable water services for unserved and underserved communities. #ItIsInYourHands #MandelaDay2026  #PaulMashatile
