I’ve spent the last few days reading lots of comments claiming Salt Lake City’s all-time heat record isn’t legitimate because of the airport weather station. Today, I talked to the National Weather Service and they responded with data, not opinions. They reminded me of their 2022 post: x.com/NWSSaltLakeCit…. During peak heating, meteorologists compared the official KSLC ASOS temperature sensor against five independent temperature sensors located just 0.25 mile away in a natural area with dry grasses. Over 20 minutes, the official station averaged 104.6°F. The five comparison sensors averaged 104.3°F. Their conclusion: they found no definitive evidence that the official station is reading artificially high due to calibration or site characteristics. There are also a few facts that many people don’t seem to know: The official Salt Lake City climate station has been at the airport since 1928. It has been relocated several times within the airport to meet operational needs, but airport observations have been part of the climate record for nearly a century. Contrary to one of the most common claims online, the ASOS temperature sensor has never been installed over grass. It has always been mounted approximately 5 feet above the ground, following national ASOS siting standards used across the country. The temperature sensor isn’t just installed and forgotten. It undergoes routine quality-control checks, typically monthly during the summer, using independent calibrated instruments. The sensor itself was replaced with a newly calibrated unit less than a month ago (June 15, 2026). By policy, it is inspected quarterly and replaced every 18 months. The ASOS doesn’t simply report one instantaneous reading. It samples the air every 10 seconds, creates 1-minute averages, then reports a rolling 5-minute average for official observations. That process helps reduce random fluctuations. Now, let’s also acknowledge something equally important: Urbanization is real. As we replace open land with concrete, asphalt, buildings, and other infrastructure, we increase the local heat storage of the landscape. That’s the urban heat island effect, and it’s supported by decades of peer-reviewed research. The National Weather Service even stated they’ll continue evaluating the site as development around the airport continues. But that’s a completely different discussion than claiming this weekend’s record was “fake.” What I find unfortunate is how hyper-focused some people have become on one instrument while losing sight of the bigger picture. This wasn’t just one weather station. We were setting or challenging records across much of northern Utah and the Great Basin. Triple-digit temperatures were widespread. The atmosphere responsible for this heat affected an entire region, not a single thermometer. And yes, we have a handful of “frequent flyers” who seem to appear under every weather post with the same instrumentation theories regardless of what the evidence shows. Healthy skepticism is part of science. But science also requires following the evidence when new data are presented. The National Weather Service didn’t dismiss the concerns. They tested them, explained how the system works, documented the maintenance history, acknowledged that future development should continue to be monitored, and shared exactly what they found. That’s how science is supposed to work. The record heat was real. The data support it. And the bigger story remains exactly what it was all weekend: Utah experienced one of the most extraordinary heat events in its recorded history. #utwx

We remain committed to ensuring the best quality temperature observations at our official Salt Lake City Airport climate site. Today during peak heat we visited a natural landscape location just ¼ mile south of the official site with 5 temperature sensors. A thread🧵

My father had a questionable situation with a church leader and was troubled with it. He went to his dad, who said that he felt he should "hold it in and not tell others" and said that, "it would be like opening a pillow - he would never be able to gather all the feathers." About 15 years later my father gained additional understanding of the situation that troubled him, which did away with all that he had been concerned about.

Free State of Jones was a masterpiece. I could only imagine how well he could portray our church prophet. I’ve studied Joseph’s life for so long, it’d be hard to capture his journey and meet expectations, but I’d love to see him brought to life. What a life he lived. By the way, Joseph Smith was murdered by a mob at age 38. Matt is 56. This movie would’ve had to be made 18 years ago.

And, thank you! The "daily stories" in a community become so much the "norm," that we take them for granted. News and reporting is more fractured than ever. There are some advantages to that, but there can also be less connection with the messenger, and little conscious acknowledgment/awareness of the work it takes to get the story and get it as right as possible. Thank you for you and your team's efforts to do just that!

It’s been a long week in court covering the Tyler Robinson preliminary hearing. I love what I do, but this job comes with a weight. We carry home a small piece of the burdens of the families whose stories we tell. This week, I watched the widow and parents of Charlie Kirk sit through testimony and video that retraced the final months of Charlie’s life. I also watched the family of Tyler Robinson; the man accused of killing Charlie. They carry a different kind of weight, one no family ever wants to bear. There were investigators in that courtroom who have seen things they can never unsee. A judge, new to the bench, presiding over a high-profile death penalty case. A defense team working to protect the constitutional rights of the accused. Prosecutors working to present their case and seek justice. We heard testimony from a UVU police officer, one of just six officers on campus that day. He had picked up an extra shift. Listening to his testimony, it was hard not to come away with the impression that the university was not prepared for what unfolded on Sept. 10, 2025. At the same time, hindsight is always clearer, and I also know the people who serve that campus show up every day with the goal of keeping students safe and providing them with a positive college experience. Then there’s me, a journalist trying every day to report the facts fairly and accurately. I’m also the mother of a UVU student who was on campus the day Charlie Kirk was killed. My son witnessed a life end in front of his eyes. That reality has stayed with our family, too. It’s a reminder that every story we cover is someone’s best day or, more often, their worst. Behind every headline are real people living through moments that change their lives forever. I just want you to know that I care deeply about this work and about getting these stories right. Many of Charlie's friends and family carried meaningful reminders of their faith throughout the week, Bibles, rosaries, and other religious items. It was nearly 100 degrees every day. Snipers remained on rooftops and around the courthouse, quietly providing security in an emotionally charged environment. Thank you to everyone who trusts KUTV to tell these difficult stories Thank you to Romy Colvin for sharing the photos of me working this week.

For reasons that became even more apparent today in court, @RealCandaceO is mistaken about what happened to @charliekirk11 She might want to consider an apology to @MrsErikaKirk
DataRepublican (small r)@DataRepublican

Hello Mrs. Owens, You told millions of people that Tyler Robinson "wasn't even there." That you felt "confident stating that Tyler Robinson did not kill murder Charlie Kirk." He was on camera. Prone on the Losi rooftop at 12:22. Shot at 12:23:28. DNA on the screwdriver at 30 quintillion to one. DNA on the rifle at 1.7 octillion to one. He told his family what he did. His parents helped him surrender. He texted his roommate: "I am, I'm sorry." He engraved "Hey Fascist! Catch!" on the ammunition a month before he used it. You said police "didn't even question" Lance Twiggs. He was interviewed twice. FBI the morning after. Joint state-federal team seven months later. His own attorney. Voluntary phone surrender. You laughed when you said it. You told Shawn Ryan a shaped charge killed Charlie. That PETN was in his microphone. The medical examiner says gunshot wound. Bullet fragments were recovered from his body. A .30-06 Mauser with Robinson's DNA was found in the woods. Neither side — not prosecution, not defense — has mentioned explosives. Not once in four days. You said the shot came from below. The Losi building is above the amphitheater. You called Erika Kirk a "clinical psychopath" to an audience of millions. You said the assassination was "an occult ritual." You said Charlie was "sitting in a pentagram." You told people Israel killed him because he refused Netanyahu. You made over a hundred episodes. You built a franchise on a dead man's name. And the hardest fact of all: Tyler Robinson's own defense lawyers — the people whose entire career is on the line to get him acquitted — have refused to make a single one of your arguments. Not one. They're challenging DNA methodology. They are doing their jobs. You were doing something else entirely. Charlie Kirk changed my life. He platformed my work when nobody knew who I was. He had my back when I was doxxed. I was the ten-thousandth most important person in his world and I will never be able to repay him. So I did what I know how to do. I read every transcript. I watched every hour of testimony. I cataloged your claims and I held them up against what was said under oath. Every single one failed. I don't know why you did this. I'm not going to speculate on your motives, because that would make me exactly the kind of analyst I've spent my career refusing to be. But I know what you did. You told people confident lies about a dead man's murder, and millions of them believed you, and some of them turned that belief into threats against his widow. The trial continues. And every day of sworn testimony is another day your words get tested against reality... under oath, on the record, where it counts. I'll be here for all of it... because just as Charlie defended me, I will do what little I can to defend his legacy and @TPUSA and @MrsErikaKirk from evil.
