as a nail tech, i’m SO tired of the "nails used to be 25$!" discourse. do you know why it was that cheap? human trafficking. south asian women were trafficked and severely underpaid & badly treated, THUS WHY salons were able to provide such cheap services. it never was worth so little. only my top coat is worth 40$. the entirety of my furniture & material is several thousands. most good quality & non toxic glues & polishes are around 40-50$ each. and i’m not even mentioning how far nail art has improved, how many more techniques have been created and how much more we can do now. this craft requires a lot of anatomical knowledge, precision, thoroughness & care. plus, if you specialize in nail art like me, you know how much effort and time it takes to create. i don’t do nails, i make art. not to mention nails *is* a luxury. it is not a need, and it’s not something you "should" be able to afford. you may want to invest in it, that its clean, simple and neat nails or maximalist, colorful & intense nails. or you may not want to. either way, i think it’s important to realize the time, work, patience & money that goes into this profession, and respect the pricing of each nail techs.
