Have you ever stopped yourself from saying something... because you realised it might hurt someone?
This morning reminded me just how powerful our words can be.
My partner messaged me from holiday after waking up with a swollen face. She has a tooth abscess.
Her first message was:
"Look how much worse this looks today."
My first instinct was to agree.
Then I stopped.
I realised she didn't need me to confirm her fears...
She needed reassurance.
So I simply replied:
"Honestly, you can barely notice. Give the antibiotics a couple of days and it'll settle down."
I didn't lie to her.
I didn't dismiss how she felt.
I simply chose words that would help instead of words that would hurt her.
What if we all paused for just for a second before we spoke?
I genuinely think the world would be a kinder place. Do you?
