New from @Stripe Economics today: One of the biggest labor market uncertainties is whether AI will displace human work at scale. Evidence so far is still early & mixed. The story of travel agents—a clear case of tech displacement—is instructive. And not entirely bleak. 🧵 /1

Pleased to be rejoining the civil service as Investment and AI adviser in DSIT. As an exited founder and angel investor in over a hundred startups I’m hopeful I can help make Britain the place for tech and AI. It’s a part time role as I will still be carrying on my work at Oxford University and on the board of the ALB of the DfE Oak National Academy. This government has made great strides on AI and tech. Excited to get going and help!

Citadel Securities published this graph showing a strange phenomenon. Job postings for software engineers are actually seeing a massive spike. Classic example of the Jevons paradox. When AI makes coding cheaper, companies actually may need a lot more software engineers, not fewer. When software is cheaper to build, companies naturally want to build a lot more of it. Businesses are now putting software into industries and tools where it was simply too expensive before. --- Chart from citadelsecurities .com/news-and-insights/2026-global-intelligence-crisis/

I don’t personally revel in the idea at all that we will lose another Prime Minister. We are making the job of politics impossible. And it is those at the sharpest end of our society who will as per usual take the hit if our economy loses out on outside investment; if our debt payments rocket - again.

If Keir Starmer resigned, Britain would have its 5th (!) Prime Minister since late 2022 — while Italy has had just one in the same period. What a time to be alive.

The regime's killings are pure, unadulterated evil, an obscene moment in history, a stain on humanity. So where are the chants of “from the Gulf to the Caspian Sea, Iran will be free”? Where is Greta Thunberg’s flotilla? Why isn’t Bob Vylan firing up the crowds against the Ayatollahs? Where are the pins, the Shir o Khorshid emblems, the pictures of Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, the emojis, the student protestors, the sit-ins, the storming of lectures, the mass demonstrations taking over central London? If you are the wrong kind of victim, the luvvies don’t care about you. As long as a regime is anti-Western and anti-Israel, its atrocities don’t matter, or are whitewashed.

The NHS expenditure in England has increased from £120.6 billion in 2016/17 to £203.4 billion planned for 2025/26 (nominal terms), an annual increase of £82.8 billion—equivalent to about £1,592 million per week. (Real-terms growth is lower, around £700 million per week based on 2022/23 data.)

FYI, here are some updated charts showing the relative performance of the UK economy since the vote to leave the EU in 2016... 🤓 (links to original data sources in final post) 1⃣ change in headline GDP since Q2 2016 (the most flattering, though boosted by population growth)

Abolish stamp on equity trading. Cut corp tax for first few years after listing. Cut CGT on sale of founder stakes at IPO. Mandate Brit ISA plus 20% of pension equity allocation to UK. And do it VERY FAST. Politicians do not seem to grasp that time is running out.
James Graham@jamesd_graham

The London Stock Exchange is dying. We have dropped out of the top 20 IPO markets, falling behind Mexico. In 2006 London raised $51bn, this year it was $248m. A 99% decrease. Some thoughts on why this matters and how we change course 🧵

I’d choose D largely for non-golf reasons, but you can make a great case for C, D or H. C has the best stretch of golf in the US (Long Island), arguably the greatest course in the world (Pine Valley), and historic major championship venues (Oakmont, Merion, Winged Foot, etc). D has the game’s most iconic club (Augusta National), the Long Island of the 21st century (Palm Beach/Jupiter/Hobe Sound), and great mountain options to stay cool in the summer (Wade Hampton etc). H has one of the best golf stretches in the world (Monterrey Peninsula up to San Fran), provides year-round good weather in places like LA, and includes underrated places in NV and Utah. I don’t see a case for the other regions over any of these three.
VJ’s Burner@makethatVJsingh

For the rest of your life, you can only play golf in ONE of the regions below. Unlimited budget + access to any course you want to play, whenever you want. Which one do you choose?

Great piece by @FraserNelson in the Times. It is amazing how much people think the world is going to pot when actually on most measures things are better than ever… Violent, lawless, broken Britain? The facts tell a different story thetimes.com/article/63b7ff…
