Advocating for JW/Ex-JW victims of the Watchtower organization and other high-demand groups. Who watches the watchmen?

I’ve been trying to gather my thoughts on what Ex-JW activism could look like going forward. I think it’s clear we’re in the middle of a sea change, so it’s possible to rethink the model. Of course, these are just my opinions, but I think it’s worth discussing. A thread:

@rothschildmd I was watched the first Purge movie for the first time and thought how implausible the formation of that new American government seemed, but nah I see it now.

Amazing that after generations of railing against the power wielded by "unelected bureaucrats," the GOP is ready to hand almost unchecked power over federal spending and hiring to Elon Musk.
Aaron Blake@AaronBlake

Elon Musk appears to agree that Trump's plans to mass deport and fire government employees will at least initially cause: -a market "tumble" -more debt -artificially suppressed wages -a "severe overreaction in the economy."

They’ve also always said false religion would definitely go first and somehow only then would governments go after their true religion. But turns out that courts go after their most damaging religions first, so that prophecy won’t work anymore.

My take: remember how JWs would salivate every time a world leader said “peace and security” because the end was coming but the Watchtower had to clear up that isn’t what they meant? They’re doing the same with religions losing influence. Making sure that carrot stays dangled.

NuLight from Bro. Jackson about the "suddennness" with which the nation's will turn over their authority to the U.N. and destroy religion. The org clearly wants ppl living on their toes, not noticing cultural trends that go against their doomsday predictions. #exJW

@GregWestgarde So do you think that by endorsing one candidate, they’re signaling that if the other one wins they won’t work with that administration?

@PabloPartigiano Unions represent individuals with very diverse beliefs. I believe endorsement goes beyond what a union’s mandate should be. They should endeavour to represent their members to the best of their abilities no matter what administration is in power.

Why do unions endorse candidates at all? Why do the members accept this? As a business owner I would never presume to speak for the employees. Should not a union act in the same manner? And furthermore, shouldn’t the IRS be completely non partisan? govexec.com/workforce/2024…

@GregWestgarde I feel like unions are some of the most overtly political organizations to be honest. I understand you differ. If I was in that situation, I’d look around and evaluate the mission of the kind of labor I do or at least why my interests are different. I’d still vote my own way.

@PabloPartigiano But I believe they fundamentally shouldn’t. I understand they do. How would I feel if I was a Trump supporter and the union I belonged to endorsed Harris or vice versa? Endorsements should be on an individual basis or come from overtly political organizations.

@GregWestgarde You really don’t think the police union should endorse the candidate that will fund police? I’m not really sure how unions could serve their mission if policy advocacy is out. They need relationships with candidates. The whole system is messed up this way.

@GregWestgarde Union leadership makes an endorsement (hopefully with the input of its members but let’s assume not) based on their advocacy for workers’ rights, labor laws, benefits, etc. I think we all understand they don’t speak for every member.

@Jerome16235677 @Liliplum2 They claim there it’s the belief structure and lifestyle, but in the three examples at the beginning, we could exchange “the truth” with “the organization.” The first is most telling with “find” instead of “learn.” It’s a specific place more than it’s a set of beliefs.

Another Jehovah's Witnesses child abuser, known to the elders and branch, has been convicted. Charges stem from the state wide Pennsylvania Grand Jury investigation into Jehovah's Witnesses cover-up of CSA.
PA Attorney General Dave Sunday@PAAttorneyGen

A Philadelphia County jury convicted David Balosa on all charges for the sexual abuse of a young child in 1998, when the defendant was a Jehovah’s Witness congregation member who utilized his position in the church to befriend the victim’s family: attorneygeneral.gov/taking-action/…

@pimitopomo @roropsych In the contrary, the local congregations seem to expend greatly to welcome the delegates and make them feel special.

@roropsych I am well aware of that. I’m talking about the delegates that spend thousands to attend these special conventions. Those that are from local congregations are not necessarily invited to all the extra events taking place outside of the three days of convention program.

After watching a few videos from the last Special Conventions, I think I’m starting to get it. Those JWs that go to these conventions spend thousands of $$ and are made to feel special. All the events around the regular program are culty to the extreme but they seem to be specifically designed so that attendees feel like “we’re having fun, we are regular people”. These people are exactly the ones that the cult wants to retain. Those that are willing to spend lots of money on such a trip even if they have to save up for years. More special conventions = profit! #exjw #ttatt #jworg #watchtower #cults

@GregWestgarde @PandemicPimo @Ron_POMO Yeah honestly some of that rhetoric seems hyperbolic and almost doomsday-like to my exjw self, and I think it’s part of the reason why Harris’ messaging is working much better than Biden’s. But yes he already showed he wasn’t willing to transfer power.

Why would you say Trump is a danger to democracy? If you were to say, “because I’m worried that when he gets elected, he will find a way to keep himself in power”, then I would say that is a concern. But is there another reason people say specifically that he is a threat to democracy? #harris #trump
