Since leaving Kansas City in February of 2019, I have personally reflected much on my nearly 20 years of leadership at IHOPKC. In light of the recent investigative report, I want to share this heartfelt apology. excellencies.org/blog/an-apolog…

The “Advocate Group” Response to the Firefly Investigative Report Last night, many of us downloaded and read the Firefly Investigative Report, which confirmed a disturbing pattern of abuse and cover-up involving Mike Bickle and IHOPKC. The emotions we feel in response are complex and deeply personal. For so long, those seeking truth and accountability were met with obfuscation, denial, and delay. Now, with this report, many survivors and advocates receive a sorrowful validation of their experiences. While words on a page cannot undo the pain and injustice suffered, we hope this acknowledgment affirms that these individuals have been heard, their experiences are believed, and they are deeply valued and loved. We are grateful to @RonSCantor and Tikkun Ministries for overseeing this process and to Jim Holler and Firefly Investigations for their diligent efforts. As former leaders, we are coming to terms with the reality that we dedicated years of our lives to a system that, while doing good in some ways, also caused significant harm. We grieve alongside those who have been wronged and humbly ask for forgiveness for the role the institution played—and continues to play—in perpetuating harm. While we are grateful for the report, we are also aware of its limitations. Given the enormity of evidence—over 6,000 pages of documentation and 220 witness statements—it was clear that a 50-page report could not fully capture the breadth of wrongdoing. We are particularly troubled by reports of financial inducements used to silence victims, the misuse of prophetic narratives as misdirection, and the many untold stories of harm. We acknowledge that some may feel disappointed that their experiences were not fully represented, and we recognize the difficult and often thankless work ahead for the Pastoral Recommendation Team assembled by Tikkun. We have also been made aware of factual inaccuracies and some fairly large omissions of wrongdoing, which have caused a number of individuals pain. We will let Tikkun comment on what process there will be to remedy this. Despite this, we remain committed to walking alongside survivors on their journey toward healing. It is our sincere hope that this moment marks the beginning of a new chapter—one of repentance, restitution, and meaningful reform. Processing the findings of this report will take time, but we pray that IHOPKC’s current leadership will engage with these revelations with humility and a commitment to necessary change. A Note on the Process We recognize that Mike Bickle and IHOPKC may continue to challenge the legitimacy of this report. Therefore, we wish to affirm the integrity of the investigative process. Since October 2023, there has been a call for an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and cover-up at IHOPKC. In response, former leaders—known as the Advocate Group—have persistently reached out to IHOPKC leadership through various channels, seeking a fair and just resolution. Unfortunately, these efforts were repeatedly met with deflection, denial, and delay. From the beginning, survivors and advocates set forth two simple yet essential requirements: first, that an attorney representing multiple survivors affirm that the investigative process is safe, and second, that the final report be made publicly available. These conditions were crucial to ensuring transparency and accountability. Without them, any investigation risked being ineffective or, worse, another layer of institutional cover-up. Despite these challenges, former leaders remained steadfast in their pursuit of truth and justice. In the first six months of 2024, the Advocate Group proposed multiple independent investigators—none of whom were affiliated with IHOPKC, the survivors’ attorney, or the Advocate Group itself. These proposals were made with the understanding that IHOPKC representatives had previously expressed openness to such candidates. It is deeply concerning that a current IHOPKC board member and the organization’s former spokesperson have now brought accusations that these efforts—undertaken with full transparency—were in any way improper or conspiratorial. We have consistently emphasized the need for impartiality. While former leaders supported the investigation, we understood that we could not oversee it ourselves. Seeking wisdom from trusted leaders in the broader faith community, we were grateful when Tikkun Ministries took on this responsibility. In doing so, we recommended Jim Holler—an investigator who came highly recommended, including by a professional previously approved by IHOPKC representatives. While Tikkun was under no obligation to accept this recommendation, we remained firm in advocating for the survivors’ core requirements. Ultimately, we are grateful that this report has been released, and we hope it serves as a step toward healing and justice.

I am grateful for Tikkun and the Firefly investigation that will be coming out today. Hopefully, we will all be in a spirit of prayer and sobriety today, ready to humble ourselves before the Lord whom “there is no creature hidden from His sight, and all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

Thank you, @RonSCantor, for this clear statement. Over this last year, you have been a consistent voice of moral clarity regarding the allegations of abuse related to Mike Bickle and IHOPKC. I am grateful for your courage and wisdom regarding the recent allegations concerning @DrMichaelLBrown. While I did not have intimate knowledge of this current situation and became aware of the details when the public did, I was invited a few days ago to meet with the board of Dr. Brown’s ministry.  They assured me they were committed to the truth, and my advice to them was simple. Please follow Dr. Brown’s own advice to the IHOPKC board and executive leadership team to drop the law firm they had hired and go with an agreed-upon, third-party investigator like GRACE or Guidepost. Overall, I found their board to be sincere and asking important questions. I was pleased to hear from one board member and now from Ron’s statement that they are committed to releasing the law firm and hiring a “trauma-informed” investigator with experience in clergy sexual abuse, while apologizing for their statements that minimized the allegations and painted them solely as demonic attacks. As Christian leaders and governing boards we must learn from the mistakes of other Christian organizations and begin to follow best practices when allegations of abuse come forward. The failure to do so has eroded trust and done much harm to the Body of Christ. I encourage Dr. Brown’s board to follow through on hiring an independent investigator that “Erin” and her advocates trust. They should also commission an investigation that widens the scope to any and all potential victims of abuse who come forward, and in the spirit of transparency, release the letter of engagement with the investigation organization to the public. When the investigation is over, the unredacted report should be made public and received by a body of respected Christian leaders and experts in the field of clergy abuse (not simply Dr. Brown’s board) in order to make proper recommendations moving forward. Best practices like this ensure that alleged victims are properly heard and cared for and that those being accused are treated fairly and receive due process.  The Body of Christ is at a historic crossroads regarding life together, leadership, and governance. Public rants against Julie Roys are not the response we need from leaders. Journalists are not the fundamental problem. It is the gross sin of powerful leaders and the cover-up of those sins by them and their ministry boards and leadership teams. Every sincere leader today needs to be responding to “another article” and “another expose” with contrition, trembling, and setting in place the necessary policies for righteous accountability, not ranting against the truth-tellers, whistleblowers, and victims.   I am pleading with and praying for Dr. Brown (whose life and ministry has impacted me greatly) and his board to not repeat the sins of disregard, arrogance, and self-preservation over and against accountability, humility, and transparency. If they resist these powerful inclinations, they have an opportunity to set an example of love and wisdom that bears long-term fruit and helps start the healing process for all involved.

STATEMENT FROM RON CANTOR REGARDING DR. MICHAEL BROWN Note: This is a personal statement, not an official statement from Tikkun Global. Six weeks ago, I received a staggering email from a former Brownsville Revival School of Ministry (BRSM) student, alerting me of very serious allegations against Dr. Michael Brown regarding two incidents with females dating back to the early 2000s. They would be detailed in an upcoming article in The Roy’s Report. Dr. Brown and I have had our differences over the years, the most significant being when he was released from BRSM and started FIRE School. But mostly, we have enjoyed a deep friendship, and I never dreamed he would be accused of such things. I emailed Dr. Brown from Israel regarding the allegations and asked if we could discuss them—I wanted to hear his side. He told me that these attacks were exaggerated, coming from people who held grudges. He was confident that once he explained things to the reporter from The Roys Report, they would agree there was no story. I was not so confident. Over the next several days, Dr. Brown and I had a back-and-forth email exchange, during which I gently and compassionately asked difficult questions. At the end of this multi-day conversation, which included many pages of emails, I found his answers lacking and inconsistent with the idea of an innocent father/daughter relationship. I was also troubled by the lack of candor regarding the second incident with a married mother. I urged him to take a break from ministry (or at least inform pastors about the allegations where he was speaking), repent to his former elders (for not disclosing it to them), and allow for a full investigation. He told me he would pray about it but never got back to me. He continued with his ministry trip, and I took that as my answer. During the next week, I spoke to members of his board, and I asked one of them if they had been in touch with Erin, one of the alleged victims. They had not. Through a third party, I contacted her the next day, and we spoke for 80 minutes. I found her narrative disturbing and heartbreaking. I wrote it down and sent it to Dr. Brown’s board. They responded that they were “deeply grieved for Erin and for all that she has gone.” They arranged to confront Dr. Brown with this new information. I was asked to attend but declined. It was after this meeting that they called for a third-party independent investigation. Dr. Brown himself called for an investigation and agreed to recuse himself. Throughout this situation, I have stayed in contact with the Line of Fire board. In discussions this week (I’m sure they also talked to others), they agreed to release the law firm they hired, seeing that they were not ideal for this type of case. They decided instead to hire a “trauma-informed” investigator with experience in clergy sexual abuse cases. I was also told they plan to apologize for a fundraising email that went out the day after The Roys Report article dropped. In it, Dr. Brown compared the witnesses and victims coming forward to “an effort of Satan” to stop him. Such words are reckless and could discourage other witnesses and victims from coming forward—not only in this situation but also in others. I would also request his associates not to contact Erin or other witnesses, as one did, in an obvious effort to silence her. Let the investigation take place unimpeded. I want to be clear—Dr. Brown confessed to me in writing much more than that which was written in his official statement. He confessed to holding Erin’s hand in public, kissing Erin on her head, giving Erin “a backhanded swipe” on her rear end “when she walked away, a few times,” and meeting her late at night at Walmart where “I put my arm around her like I would a daughter – idiotically, but intentionally, in public.” I hoped he would’ve been as transparent in his official statement. It is only because he wasn’t that I feel compelled to share this here. Erin’s testimony is far more severe, but I am not the investigator. Like others, I will sit down with this new investigator (I would not have worked with the original law firm) and share my emails. I encourage anyone with information to speak to the investigator—assuming it will be a trauma-informed, non-lawyer investigator. Your other brothers and sisters who have come forth (and many others) will receive you warmly. You do not need to be afraid. Lastly, I want to say to those who have come forth with pure consciences to share their stories that I applaud you! Before one chooses to become a whistleblower, one must count the cost. It takes great courage and personal sacrifice. Some of them may be wondering if they did the right thing. In my opinion, they did. Most of the time, these are people who don’t want to be in the public eye. But this investigation would not have happened without their testimony. That is a fact. Most tried Matthew 18 and went to Dr. Brown privately but were rebuffed. I want to specifically honor Erin for having the courage to tell her story. Ron Cantor

Vamos, @RafaelNadal!   As you get ready to graduate from tennis, I’ve got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional.   Let’s start with the obvious: you beat me—a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no one else could. On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to hold my ground. You made me reimagine my game—even going so far as to change the size of my racquet head, hoping for any edge.   I’m not a very superstitious person, but you took it to the next level. Your whole process. All those rituals. Assembling your water bottles like toy soldiers in formation, fixing your hair, adjusting your underwear... All of it with the highest intensity. Secretly, I kind of loved the whole thing. Because it was so unique—it was so you.   And you know what, Rafa, you made me enjoy the game even more.    OK, maybe not at first. After the 2004 Australian Open, I achieved the #1 ranking for the first time. I thought I was on top of the world. And I was—until two months later, when you walked on the court in Miami in your red sleeveless shirt, showing off those biceps, and you beat me convincingly. All that buzz I’d been hearing about you—about this amazing young player from Mallorca, a generational talent, probably going to win a major someday—it wasn’t just hype.   We were both at the start of our journey and it’s one we ended up taking together. Twenty years later, Rafa, I have to say: What an incredible run you’ve had. Including 14 French Opens—historic! You made Spain proud... you made the whole tennis world proud.   I keep thinking about the memories we’ve shared. Promoting the sport together. Playing that match on half-grass, half-clay. Breaking the all-time attendance record by playing in front of more than 50,000 fans in Cape Town, South Africa. Always cracking each other up. Wearing each other out on the court and then, sometimes, almost literally having to hold each other up during trophy ceremonies.   I’m still grateful you invited me to Mallorca to help launch the Rafa Nadal Academy in 2016. Actually, I kind of invited myself. I knew you were too polite to insist on me being there, but I didn’t want to miss it. You have always been a role model for kids around the world, and Mirka and I are so glad that our children have all trained at your academies. They had a blast and learned so much—like thousands of other young players. Although I always worried my kids would come home playing tennis as lefties.   And then there was London—the Laver Cup in 2022. My final match. It meant everything to me that you were there by my side—not as my rival but as my doubles partner. Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career.   Rafa, I know you’re focused on the last stretch of your epic career. We will talk when it’s done. For now, I just want to congratulate your family and team, who all played a massive role in your success. And I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next.   Rafa that!   Best always, your fan,
 Roger
