✉️ A little update from Numen Games Hello to my small but cherished audience, Let me start with a quick excuse, consistency has never been my strongest card when it comes to communication and building a proper marketing strategy. For the last 4+ years, I honestly thought it wasn’t the most urgent thing. But on November 2nd, we hit 5 years with Numinia project, with Numen Games as its main driver. And now it feels like a good time to share where we are and what’s been going on. We’re still convinced the world is in The Molt: Dancing in the Collapse (as @robek_world one of my favorite artists writes in this article): rwx.mirror.xyz/cx8xOAAdfYAC64… We’re not tech pessimists, but neither blind tech optimists. Let’s say we carry optimism in our DNA, but with both feet on the ground. What we’re building with @numinia_xyz is tricky to label: - It’s a meta-game, - a gamified framework for gamification, - a tabletop RPG, - a platform, - and a shared imaginary world. In other words: a tool to help navigate this massive transformation that for those of us inside it feels as big as the second industrial revolution, only this time it’s about digitalization. I often say: if we compare today’s 3D internet to cinema history, we’re still in the black-and-white era. No sound & no color. What happened in the last 9 months? - María García joined the team, helping us become less chaotic and more structured. - We bet on Hyperfy.io, an open-source graphics engine that gives us wings. - We signed our first contract. - The first version of the tabletop RPG is written. - We’re building the hosting platform for hyperpersonal worlds we always wished that existed. - Other entrepreneurs are already creating and monetizing experiences on what we build. We’ve given talks, both online and offline, to spread the vision. What’s next? Starting from November, our focus will be into clearer communication as we move closer to our beta. If you’re curious about the 3D internet, if you’d like a short adventure to showcase your company, or even if you just want to explore what we’re making please reach out. I’d be happy to give you a space. This journey has been the most exciting I’ve had except, of course, for building a family. I hope this little letter gives a glimpse of what’s happening at Numinia. If it resonates with you, I’d love for you to comment, share, or simply drop a like. If the future excites you, keep us in mind, we’re thinking of you a lot. PabloFM つづく

Giuliano@Giuliano_Mana

40. If your personality is prone to addictions, redirect the addiction. I was addicted to videogames as a teenager. College was a wake up call. One day I just said, That's it, I don't play videogames anymore. Fascinating fast forward, it worked. And it worked because I realized what I was addicted to wasn't videogames themselves. It was the mental stimulation they provided. A good videogame fully absorbs you. You have to do dozens of calculations every single second and there's a great feedback loop embedded into the system. Once recognized, I was able to change the object of my 'addiction''. My logic was simple, if this is what my mind wants, let's find a healthier and more productive way to supply it. That's how I stumbled into reading. I despised reading in school; thought it was boring. But a few books in college helped me better understand why they were so powerful. I got a glimpse of how much a book can stimulate the mind and, wanting to redirect my attention, I started reading. Reading worked in much smaller doses than videogames did. When that's the case, a bit of discipline is required. I knew I wouldn't find a perfect substitute, so I settled for something that was good enough. You have to be honest with yourself upfront. You can fool yourself in many ways, but not in this one. You can't tell yourself something will be an absolute joy, because then you have to go do the thing. And the moment you realize it's not as fun as your earlier self promised, you'll drop it. Somewhere in this process I started thinking about addictions as obsessions instead. This was a very useful reframe. To some extent, there's some truth in the idea of your inner speech. What you tell yourself defines how you see things. If you think you're addicted, that's that. If you think you're obsessed, you know it's temporary and you can redirect it toward something else. A subtle change in wording works wonders psychologically. I'm not sure personality traits such as this can be changed, so you might as well use them to your advantage. Over 5-6 years, I read 200-250 books, letters, essays, watched many interviews and listened to podcasts. My new obsession became knowledge acquisition. Left at that, it means nothing, but it's way better than the alternative and has had some positive side effects: - Started writing (thousands of pages in 3-4 years) - Improved thinking - Understood a couple of things, which is fun - Led to an obsession over investing - More interesting conversations and higher quality people - Landed jobs out of writing and thinking, essentially - Failed a couple of times at entrepreneurship If you think you can't do something, you're right. If you think you can, you're also right.

I genuinely think that anyone attempting to make a game engine that takes prompts and turns it into a game is doing something cool, however... Many who are trying to build this kind of thing, and the people that think that everyone is going to be playing games like this in a year (or two or whatever) are deluding themselves. Games are about artificial constraints. They are created by a developer that determines players of the game can do this, but not that. The trick for the developer is to tune the challenge with the payoff. If the player accomplishes something they should be rewarded. What I see in these prompt-a-game clips though is reward system hacking. The player thinks of a thing they'd like and then prompts in into existence. They didn't earn it, there wasn't any friction, there isn't a designed set of rules. And that last part is important, a designed set of rules. What I think many people miss is that these designs are good when they are culturally relevant. That's their appeal. They hook into games that precede them or they invent ways to defy them. Either way can make it interesting. I'm betting that there will be a prompt-to-play runaway hit someday, but without design and constraint they will never become a runaway hit.

There are a LOT of companies out there right now trying to build AI-native game engines where users can turn words into games. The video below shows exactly what they're trying to achieve. It turns out "words -> game" is much harder than it looks... How do you make vehicles and other machines operate correctly in a sandbox where anything can happen? How do you support tool-based items when everything you grab requires different poses and mechanics? How do you make sure that everything created works coherently with everything else and doesn't break? How can multiple people be in one game at once and see the same chaos happening at the same time all in sync? What about physics? How do we make it run well on every device, even phones? It turns out generation was never the real problem, coherence was.

Fuente: @RWA_xyz
