"Mathematically, it has no particular merit – bookmakers like it because it is extremely bad value for the mug punter, and some pro punters like it because in certain cases it is a steal. If racing is to take itself seriously, it needs a better product. "A “performance” bet is a much better option – the better your horse does, the greater the return on the bet. A win gets you more than second place, but second gets you more than third, etc. Maybe the bet return degrades on a Fibonacci scale – I’ve seen these types of bet payouts in other sports and it works well."
