I’m sorry that you returned to Al-Shujaiya not as you should have, but lifeless, wrapped in cloth, sealed inside a plastic body bag. I’m sorry we couldn’t gather all your friends, students, colleagues, and loved ones from around the world to stand together at your funeral, to honor you the way you deserved. I’m sorry I couldn’t recognize you by your clothes. I’m sorry that I had to carry your remains in pieces. And I’m sorry that I cannot sit by your grave forever. I’m sorry Ya Refaat, that I had to dig for your body, that I had to lift your bones with my own hands. Never in my life did I imagine I would endure such a day, such a heartbreak. I’m sorry that I didn’t cry, that I didn’t scream, that I didn’t collapse. And I’m deeply sorry that I cannot put into words the depth of grief and anguish that has taken root in my heart, the same sorrow I saw in the eyes of your sons, Omar and Ahmed, as we laid you to rest.
