Any human who is mean and goes out of their way to wound, belittle, or humiliate is often acting from a place of poverty. Yes, poverty in the literal sense. As in deprivation, hunger. But also poverty of the soul that stems from dreams that never materialised, talent that found no door to walk through, opportunities that were maybe promised but never arrived. Or just hunger for purpose. Meanness is sometimes an overflow of the pain they have no language for. And so, when you encounter these vile people here on social media, in the work place or in society; these people who are unnecessarily unkind, remember there is hunger at work, balambile. Hunger for validation. Hunger for a different life. Hunger to matter. Hunger to feel seen. Instead of being hurt by their meanness. Just pray, sincerely, that their breakthrough comes soon. This does not excuse harmful behaviour. But it explains its roots. May your hunger never turn you into a vile human.

Corporate South Africa can learn a thing a lot about transformation and setting people up for success rather than leaving them to devices and setting them up for failure. This team’s view is, “Of course transformation works and we will make sure it’s hugely successful.”
