What Ho…A Rat!!
What Ho…A Rat!!@WhatHoARat·
Just finished this, my second by Christopher Priest after Inverted World. I picked it up years ago when I saw the Nolan adaptation, which remains the only film of his I really like. Fun...Priest writes would i would call 'high concept' fantasy and sci-fi. Each of these books is an elaborate construction designed to sell a really wacky premise, using the tension of its apparent inexplicability as an engine. In this one, two 19th century magicians are at war with one another...both have a trick in their act that miraculously produces another version of themselves. Where it goes from there is truly batshit.

@WhatHoARat Oh man, talk to me about Christopher Priest. He changed the way I thought about storytelling. If you can find it, you have to read The Separation. The Adjacent and The Affirmation are also really good. But nothing beats The Separation for its inability to reconcile with itself.

Update!! Omg they FOUND him!! He’s on his way to hospital, I don’t have any other information on condition or what happened but just so glad he’s been found and is alive! Thanks so much to everyone for the prayers and positive vibes. ❤️

My cousin has been missing for days now. Gone without a single trace. There’s gotta be an explanation and he’s going to come home and be fine, but nothing about it makes any sense.

@WhatHoARat @moonandmouth I’ve been using it to Google the wines in my “cellar” and it’s actually amazing. It scours wine reviews and gives me a drinking window. I hate so much about it but the ‘Google on steroids’ aspect is great - especially if you’re a boozy asshole like me

@moonandmouth I like using it as a research assistant for historical fiction. Like a search engine plus. It finds me surprisingly good info...

ai is bad (crowd cheers) unless it's for anime world cup videos like majin buu haaland (crowd boos) but definitely bad for writing fiction (crowd cheers) unless the resulting fiction wins a contest exposing the bankruptcy of literary gatekeepers (crowd narrows eyes suspiciously)

@GergleySteve Travel to weird or kitschy landmarks within a 100 mile radius. Write a story about each one. Get a tube and float down a local creek. Join a sport or gaming meetup. Make a fancy dish you’ve always wanted to try and invite a friend over to eat. Watch a director’s entire oeuvre.

@jrostopovich @cwik_greg I only have 3 ratings for novels - bad, average, amazing. Thoughts on Hannibal v Red Dragon? I read them back to front and Hannibal was my favourite. Red Dragon didnt really grab me but maybe I was over it by then.

@cwik_greg You’ve been busy! And I like that you’re a generous star reviewer. I’m likewise. Like, even pretty mediocre or tedious books get three stars from me. It’s an incredible feat to write a novel, always feels like that alone deserves some acknowledgment.

Forgive me for I have sinned. I have had Star Fox for Switch 2 only hours and I have already allowed Slippy to be shot down so he’d shut the hell up.

The reason that AI writing keeps winning prizes is that for years, the mainstream literary establishment rewarded minimalist “clean” writing while shunning anything with a soul. No wonder they can no longer tell the difference.
Nabeel S. Qureshi@nabeelqu

*Another* apparently AI-generated story wins a literary prize, this time judged by a panel including the novelist Ruth Ozeki. Literary prizes need to start including Pangram checks in their process, or else change the rules to make AI writing ok. It’s very simple!

@jrostopovich @poemPilled God that’s gross. I’m sorry you go through that. Can I ask if there’s a correlation with argumentative rejected and writing quality? 😂

@PalmerWriting @poemPilled Oh, this was just some random guy commenting on a photo of me, lol. But I do sometimes get sub tweeted after rejections and have even had people argue with me after being rejected.

@cwik_greg I read The Exorcist earlier this year and I was blown away by how good he was - at prose and story level. Dimiter is on my wish list.

@cwik_greg @PalmerWriting They are so cute together. Incredibly romantic how she’s his muse and he always *insists* on including her in all his projects. I think she’s been in pretty much every one of his films/music videos.

@jrostopovich @cwik_greg I went down a Rob Zombie rabbit hole a few years ago because I got all excited about Queens of the Stone Age’s new album but then I saw someone say they were “the very last group flying the hard rock flag.” 😞

@cwik_greg I feel like Rob Zombie is a cultural artifact of a very specific time and melange of influences. I’m not even sure someone like that can be reproduced generationally. Especially given the scope of his music and film oeuvre. Incredibly singular artist.
