Although #pancreaticcancer is currently the 11th most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S., it is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, after lung and colorectal. And it is predicted to become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths before 2030. Because 13% survival is not enough, PanCAN has set a bold goal: Drive the five-year survival rate to 20% by 2030. We will do this by accelerating research, expanding patient support and championing a thriving field. 💜

We’re grateful to @KTLA for welcoming Star Trek’s @JonathanSFrakes ahead of PanCAN PurpleStride to share why he’s walking to end pancreatic cancer this weekend. 👟💜 Jonathan strides in honor of his younger brother, Daniel. He shares, “He and I moved to New York together. We came across the country together in a 1967 Chevy Sportvan. We listened to music together. We lived in rundown apartments together." Then, the unthinkable happened. Daniel was diagnosed with #pancreaticcancer. He died May 17, 1997, at the age of 41, just one week shy of the birth of Jonathan’s daughter. “It was quite shocking — and still is — to not have him as part of my life." Today, Jonathan honors his brother’s memory through his work with PanCAN, using his platform to raise critical funds and awareness. In addition to his brother, he is inspired by fellow Star Trek actor and dear friend @KittySwink, a 20-plus-year survivor. Together, they founded the PanCAN PurpleStride Los Angeles team, Trek Against Pancreatic Cancer — raising hundreds of thousands of dollars while helping advance PanCAN’s mission to support patients and drive research forward. Jonathan shares, “We make progress, but we have a long, long, long way to go. We need to detect pancreatic cancer earlier, so that people like Daniel aren’t diagnosed so late. We need to find better treatment options for those who are battling the disease. The Rogel and Blondy Center for Pancreatic Cancer at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center has been a part of #PanCANPurpleStride Michigan since day one. 👟💜 They were there with a team at the very first PurpleStride Michigan in 2009 and have participated every year since. They’ve been sponsors since 2018 and have returned this year as Premier Sponsor for PurpleStride Michigan. Their staff and team are just as enthusiastic as they were in 2009 — their team is already more than 10% over their goal! “I’m looking forward to being around other people who share a passion for making things better for patients with pancreatic cancer and their families. The community mindset when everyone is together, supporting the same cause, working toward the same goals, is an incredible feeling.
