I collaborated with @WardLabs to look at the mineral content of forages submitted. Most pasture and hay samples will not even provide half of the copper and zinc needs of a cow. Corn silage is low in manganese as well as Cu and Zn. hayandforage.com/article-3142-D… @UNLBeef

@hnw2 “It does take time, but visual inspection can sure be improved by doing the clipping.” This was a rancher quote. Is the learning process associated monitoring the real benefit? Probably a diminishing return on investment at some point.

Do we, actually, need more monitoring data? What if we do not actually need more monitoring data...

Dry over most of Nebraska. How are your pastures looking for fall and winter grazing and how do your drought plans look for 2021? @UNLBeef

Been getting questions about nitrate risk of grazing drought stressed annuals. Grazing can be lower risk than feeding high nitrate hays but management is key! check out these tips to reduce risk @UNLBeef cropwatch.unl.edu/2018/reducing-…

I forgot to link the @CorbLund abstract “You can fail to achieve what you'd always believed You were capable of from the start [a state shift] And the short native grasses don't care that the ashes Of your dreams match their dry shade of brown” youtu.be/MmFf6O8e8rk

In press (JVS)! Plant community response to grazing /exclosure is reversible (within 6-16 yrs), relatively symmetrical, occurring faster recently (1992-2017) than in mid-20th century. Photo: N. Dufek long term exclosure (left) newly grazed (92-onward, mid) and Long term grazed

@Nebraskero The “ducks in the stock tank” drought index. I like the sound of that.

I could show you a chart we use called the Drought Tracker but saying there are lot more ducks in the stock tanks than usual might be a better visual.

Are your cows ready for calving? If she looks like this (BCS 4) then more energy is in order. Late gestation is the last chance to improve condition before calving and thus increase newborn health and cow breeding success. extensionpublications.unl.edu/assets/pdf/ec2… @UNLBeef
