Depending on what you mean by "concern themselves with dress," it's not true that male leaders aren't concerned with image. In fact, many have employed a small army of tailors, stylists, fashion designers, and even makeup artists to craft their image. For instance, you can walk down Savile Row and enter any of the major tailoring shops, go towards the back of the shop, and open the historical ledger books. Therein, you'll find famous names such as Winston Churchill, Haile Selassie, and JP Morgan at Henry Poole. Or names like King Charles and Isaiah Berlin at Anderson & Sheppard. At Gieves & Hawkes, a bespoke tailoring shop known for its military attire, you'll find names such as Admiral Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington, as well as Michael Jackson, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Charlie Chaplin. In the first slide, you can see Isaiah Berlin wearing a bespoke three-piece suit made for him by Anderson & Sheppard. On the second slide, you can see a tracing of Karl Marx's foot in the ledgers of Peal & Co (a now-defunct bespoke shoemaking firm). Many do, it's just that they employ tailors, stylists, and make-up artists to handle it for them. If done well, it looks effortless. They conceal this effort because fashion has been historically coded as a feminine interest, largely because women were excluded from more "serious" parts of society, such as law, academia, finance, and such. Frankly, it should be no surprise that male leaders are concerned about image because we currently have a US President who wears more makeup than a clown. Every bit of his image — the heavily padded, extended shoulders and bright red tie — are intentionally used to telegraph ideas about power and strength.
