"Have you heard of the Edomite Theory? It's an attempt to explain who the modern Jews are, exactly. And until the birth of political Zionism in the 19th century, this was a common question that everyone was asking, especially the Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews. If you hate the "conspiracy theories" that attempt to answer that question, just know that until the 1800s, neither the Ashkenazi nor Sephardic Jews claimed to be the ethnic lineage of Abraham. Both had their own widely-accepted and written histories that either denied it, or acknowledged that they are at the least, mostly something else entirely. And until political Zionism set its sights on Palestine for a Jewish Ethnostate instead of Argentina, Madagascar, Siberia, or some other place, diaspora Jews didn't concern themselves with alleging Semitic ancestry. So if they can ask the question, "Who are we?" it's a fair question. The Edomite Theory attempts to answer that. Turns out, the Bible doesn't treat Edom as a dead ancient tribe. The prophets treat it as a recurring covenantal enemy of God and God's people. Edom is condemned for standing against God’s people, rejoicing when Jerusalem falls, and exploiting crisis for power. By the time Jesus is born, the king trying to kill him is an Edomite. Edom did not disappear. Whether you believe the Edomite Theory or not the fact is, Edomites (1) embedded themselves in Israel (2) took positions of power and control over Israel and are (3) treated by the prophets as much, much more significant prophetically than they appear to be historically. None of that is theory. All of that is in the Bible and is inarguable. So what does Jesus mean when he says, "Your father is the devil?" What does Paul mean when he says, "Not all Israel is Israel"? If you hold to the Edomite Theory you'll answer these questions differently than most. The Edomite Theory aside, Edom is way, way more significant than most Christians realize. You won't pick it up from the pulpit, but will pick it up from the Bible if you read carefully. And that's no theory; that's fact. That is why people get nervous. And even if the Edomite Theory isn't something you can co-sign, studying it will give you a deeper, richer understanding of Biblical prophecy and how types and shadows operate."
