@ParentCps

Parent to two children in a neighborhood school. Not part of a school system, teachers' union, charter, or anything, really.

In 2008, 62% of teachers said they were very satisfied with their job. In 2022, that dropped to 12%. We've got a serious problem brewing in education...

@Bearthafuckdown @culturecanceler I'm generally a shameless tax-and-spend liberal, but the other issue beyond Mayor Johnson's incompetence in my view was his unethical favoring of friends*. I don't trust him to spend any increased tax revenue in a fair or wise manner.

@Bearthafuckdown @culturecanceler My problem with the head tax was that a company with $1M in profits that employed 200 employees and zero robots would be taxed higher than a company with $1M in profits, 2 employees, and 200 robots.

@culturecanceler @ParentCps The head tax worked in the old economy - I fear it wouldn't have worked so well in 2026. Business and wealth are more remote/mobile than ever. Ideologically, I agree with corporations paying their fair share (more), but at a local level I'm weary of these proposals.

@culturecanceler I can't stand him but will admit that this is the most fair take I've read on the mayor. I'd add that he kicked the can down the road financially, but not as much as Daley did. His incompetence at appointments and management prevented the implementation of some of his bad ideas.

Look, is mayor Johnson perfect? He got violent crime down. The 78 broke ground. Cranes going. The cta is a little better, schools improved a little despite structural challenges. Bad at appointments. Screwed up the migrant crisis. All in all an average Chicago mayoral term

"Teens charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, or sex crimes cannot participate in the new program." -Good. I do hope the analysis of the pilot includes any impact on classmates forced to go to school with teens charged with serious crimes.
Mila Koumpilova@MilaKoumpilova

A Chicago pilot program aims to keep some teens charged with serious crimes in school — and out of trouble — while they await trial. They'll need to go to school five days a week and attend 20 hours of therapy, mentoring and tutoring. chalkbeat.org/chicago/2026/0…

If you are a CPS board member and know the names of the finalists for the CPS CEO job, you should leak the names. In fact, it's your moral obligation to students to leak the names. Twitter is a heck of a lot better at vetting than CPS or Mayor's office is.

lol this isn't the point of this story at all but I must point out: Chalkbeat *also* revealed a CEO finalist name in November and published shortly before the Sun-Times/WBEZ did! They did have *both* names, and we only had one. Please pardon my ego: chalkbeat.org/chicago/2025/1…

@reemadamin Definitely worth noting. And now he's using $$$ that could go to schools to ask reporters to give up sources. I hope this motivates you even more to research what a slimeball the board of ed president is. I assume you're aware of his O'Hare contract application?

Worth noting that this is focused on a special *public* meeting from months ago involving a tax increase. It is difficult for the public to know a special, previously unscheduled meeting is coming up unless someone tells you, you check the board website daily, or you walk by CPS.

An email I received this morning from the law firm of Salvatore, Prescott, Porter and Porter: "As you know, we are conducting an investigation involving the CPS Board of Education and communications with the media.  We understand you have information relevant to our investigation. If you are willing to talk to us, we would appreciate scheduling time to speak with you." I have some questions.

@TheGentlemanCan @paschutz Sorry nobody took you up on it. Now if you are very confident that there is a ghost employee, it isn't libel to just out them in a tweet, y'know?

@ParentCps @paschutz I actually reached out to a trio of reporters with allegedly strong views on education reform but after I summarized what I thought I had found there was no response. One lady was from NPR

Chicago Public Schools—the largest municipal junk-bond issuer in the United States—is paying a law firm to investigate how journalists learned of the school board's plan to pass a $25M property tax hike. This "investigation" was initiated by CPS Board President Sean Harden. Harden was hand-picked by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and backed by the Chicago Teachers Union.
