@Parksidesuz I know, I'm one of them. You're missing the point, Suzanne. Most, if not all, choose to taper themselves because of bad advice from prescribers.

"Tapering doesn’t require medical training." This dangerous claim has injured thousands. Real tapering demands hyperbolic cuts, liquid micro-dosing, half-lives, knowing when to hold or reinstate, and distinguishing withdrawal from relapse. Patients built online forums because the “experts” gaslit them, rushed them off the drugs, then abandoned them. Yet a clinical psychologist insists it needs no medical training. Not just wrong, it’s potentially reckless and harmful. I think the term she’s actually looking for is: “Tapering requires medical training, and those who’ve successfully achieved it may be useful to speak with.” Then again, when was the last time Annie Hickox engaged in any meaningful discussion with a #PrescribedHarm patient?

SSRIs are safe, effective, and save lives. More importantly, RFK Jr. has no medical background, could probably use a psych eval himself, and needs to GTFO of people's medical decisions.

This is outrageous.. Not a single person on my flight is masked up while we’re in the middle of a double pandemic (Covid + Hantavirus). I politely informed the flight attendant that this is a super spreader event. She just shrugged and walked away. I've already filed a formal complaint with the FAA and CDC. This is reckless and cannot stand. Masks save lives, the science is settled on that.

Mikhaila, I've been deprescribing for 20 years. Withdrawal is a rare outcome of most prescriptions of SSRIs. I have both prescribed and deprescribed 1000s of patients. Of course, for benzodiazepines its been well established, but for SSRIs, the rate of significant (anything hurting someones functioning or enough for them to seek help for it) withdrawal is less than 10% (both anecdotally and in the best research i can find).

The APA's response is the right frame for this one. She said two things: the blanket overprescribing hypothesis is contested, and she hopes to be at the table for developing clinical guidelines. Both are true. The medical community has wanted better tapering support for years. The reality of antidepressant withdrawal has been underacknowledged in clinical settings. Paying for deprescribing conversations is a reasonable policy. These parts of Kennedy's announcement are not the controversy. The controversy is in what surrounded them. Kennedy repeated at the summit, with no medical organizations present, that SSRIs contributed to school shootings - a claim the NYT characterized as made without evidence. He compared SSRI withdrawal to heroin withdrawal based on personal experience. The summit's keynote featured a speaker describing mental health care as a "deceptive mythology." The clinical questions here - how common is severe withdrawal, who benefits from SSRIs, what does appropriate prescribing look like - are legitimately debated in medicine. They deserve to be answered by the people who study them. No major medical organizations were in the room where the policy was set. The APA is asking to be at the table. That should be the starting point, not the afterthought.
